Any idea what this is - Pipe coming from what looks like the middle of the damp proof course.

Yeah I'd say either a drain point for heating system, or an old gas feed.
Is your house inflatable? Is that where you put the footpump?
Take the cap off. If you hear ghostly laughter and distant screams, put it back on again.

I wondered about undoing it but feared the house might deflate if I did and like an air bed never be able to get enough air in before getting the back cap on.

So I'd guess it's a drain for those pipes.
My mate's house had (overhead) gas pipe leading into the greenhouse at the back for heating. Something like that?
