I have been banned twice - once years ago for an offensive joke and once recently for "obsessive arguing" after being warned off. Bang to rights in both cases.

Only times in trouble with the mods IIRC. that and a warning for using a phase for furriners as used in Dads Army

I have a huge amount of sympathy for the mods. I think I’ve mentioned before in a similar thread (these do seem to crop up every couple of months...) that I was once a moderator on the official forum for a reasonably well-known metal band. It was very hard striking a balance between what was seen as banter and in-jokes, and what tipped over the line to unpleasant behaviour that brought the atmosphere of the entire forum down and made many of the… ahem, less dramatic members of the community start avoiding the place.

The problem was that if the moderators enforced the rules rigidly, there would be mass moaning that the place was sterile, and that it wasn’t right for a metal forum, it’s only banter, etc. But if we left it, stuff would start to escalate and then we’d have to have a crackdown and put up reminders for the rules, then there would be moaning that we were making the place sterile. And there were situations where it wasn’t black or white – sometimes things were a bit fuzzy, and it came down to individual moderator judgement (or we discussed it and put it to a vote). Sometimes past behaviour is taken into context too. It can make the moderating seem a bit inconsistent and therefore unfair, but unless you want something like /b/ on 4Chan, you have to draw the line somewhere. If you’re trying to draw in a broad audience and have advertisers (or a band) to please, sometimes that line is quite lengthy.

In short, you’re all a bunch of moany moanfaces. And now a lolcat.

Am I the odd one out then, I've never been banned or even had a warning?

Nope, me neither.

I did get a warning for posting illegal links (I hadn't). I was in 2 minds whether to go "It wasn't me, sir!" or just let it slide...

rather than the traditional rufty tufty sweary laddish culture that used to be the norm for off road biker types

I have been aware of an mtb 'culture' since the late '80s..

IME it has only ever been the exclusive preserve of the geeky uber nerd.. 😀

Am I the odd one out then, I've never been banned or even had a warning? Maybe it's cos I try to consider what I'm saying in the light of "real life" and how other people might interpret my words?

Me too buddy. But I'm beginning to think it's just because I'm boring, not because i'm nice and polite... I feel a little left out, 'coz I've never been warned or banned or owt... 🙁

And that's half, if not all of the problem as you can see in this thread, if and when someone wants to accuse you of being nasty, they can. If it's reported you get a ban, I'm just trying to work out how offended I can be by pelicans. I'm slowly working myself into a bit of a rage, let's see where it goes. If you feel that you have to hold back, wouldn't it be fair to say that free speech is now being lost and you can't speak your mind for fear of upsetting someone? That can't be good. I'm all for free speech and the right to free speech, I am, however, against the personal insults. Calling someone an idiot becasue they are an idiot is factual rather than an insult, I did also apologise to some idiots I know for the slur on them.

don - you do not get a ban if reported. You get a ban if the mods think it appropriate.

Some of this thread is so vomit inducing that I'm seriously considering becoming a premier member just so I can leave offensive tags on the subject.

What would you like tagged sir?

You see, neither had my friend, and he's been posting on here since you and he had much longer usernames. He therefore thought he knew fairly well the tone of the forum, and the acceptable in-jokes. Turns out he didn't, or that what was once acceptable is not anymore. Everyday is a schoolday, and he'll return (tomorrow) a wiser poster.

So, you lack self awareness to such an extent that you don't think there's anything sad about meta e-drama? You really want to waste time talking about a site you waste time on, on the site you waste time on?

I love this place, it's like a proto-internet.

Surely you're helping them by explaining their idiocy? It's a kind of social justice thing you should be thanked for it. 😉

Personally I struggle, I cope by method acting as Derek, it's the only way, I'd have been flung off and thermo nuked ten times over if I'd been myself. I use a dumbed down version of a yottie dinghy persona I had to create for that forum, it's part of the fun I find, being a total addict to these places, one ends up acting out various persona to suit the different fora.

Then I'm a piss taking bastard in real life, some might even say a total cock.. 😀

It would have been me that put the drawing pin on the Physics masters chair that got the whole class detention after they'd stopped weeping from the tear gas bomb that had gone off in my pocket.

Did you really do that?
It is funny but exactly what would prompt you to that particular image?
I think your creativity should be encouraged and nurtured in order to satisfy my curiosity.

Sorry yossarian, I bottled the second one but I didn't want to tear the arse completely out of it. I have a feeling I'm on dodgy ground now.

sure did, it was my profile picture on facebook for a long time, mighty disturbing as the woman in the photo looks like my sister and all my friends thought it was actually her (dodgy 30p style wimminz magazine - "i married my gran and now we're expecting conjoined triplets" type magazine).

I've had probably half a dozen warnings and two or three bans. Some were totally justified, some points I've questioned. What irks me slightly is that on any occassions I've emailed the mods back with a POV in the offence in question, they very rarely have the common courtesy to reply.

I was warned today for use of a word beginning with w and is slang for masturbating. It was stated as being in the STW swear filter. The filter must be broken then, as there was no attempt made by myself to get round it. I do accept however its not a word to be used on here in the future.

I haven't been banned yet from this place yet which surprises me, as I'm either a thread terminator, or my posts are removed swiftly before they cause too much unrest.
I've been in this country 18 months and I've noticed the rude and shock humour which goes down so well in Australia isn't taken too well around here.
I think there should be a subforum for banned people though to spend their time whilst are removed from the main forum.
I think I'd voluntarily spend more time in there anyway.

I remember that. Thought it was a bit ott; I've got an album by a world-famous female singer-songwriter where she's breast-feeding a piglet on the cover. Would posting a copy on here constitute a banning offence, I wonder?

been banned lots, quite a few warnings, managed to get banned for3 days an image that was reposted by someone else in the same thread that apparently was fine 2nd time around. A bit of consistency with the Victorian sensibilities would at least make it easy to comply with. guestimating what the mods are going to throw a hissy fit over is like trying to nail spaff to a wall. 😕

I got warned for being insulting to myself once, that was a little odd. And for censoring out a swear word with asterisks- "swear filter avoidance" in a thread where other people used the same word in full. You've got to wonder. But hey, I wouldn't mod this place (I do mod other forums, just not ones full of maniacs)

you do not get banned for a first offence usually.

I did. Though to be fair it was for something which gets quite a significant mention in the forum rules - and I did succeed in getting my ban lifted following a discussion with the powers that be (I wasn't even actually trying to get unbanned, just explain myself).

So has anybody else ever succeeded in getting a ban lifted or just me?

And for censoring out a swear word with asterisks- "swear filter avoidance" in a thread where other people used the same word in full.

Yeah - I got a warning today for that, despite going to the effort of starring out all but one letter of the offensive bit of the word, so you'd really have to use your imagination - far worse is routinely let go. They called it swear filter avoidance, I call it self censoring.

Interestingly, one of the words I got removed isn't in the swear filter.

like trying to nail spaff to a wall.

<Googles 'spaff'>

Hmmm thought as much, eaugh. Nice mental image, lol if I was an uptight prudish git I could probably report that... But I'm not and have never reported anything, because I have never, once, seen anything worth getting upset about on this site. There is far, far worse in the comments below the average youtube clip than on here, and that doesn't bother me either.
I see erm 'eye opening' comments as a rare opportunity to peek inside minds very different from my own, and as a reminder that there are some very strange people out there. Educational, if you like. What's the point of getting rid of offensive posts anyway? The offensive poster still exists, if not here, then somewhere...
