I get time away from the site.
Advertisers lose revenue as I have to do my shopping by other means.
My point of view hasn't changed.
I have even less respect for some than I did before.

At least it makes the banners happy.

A happy banner:

Well, no, because you're not banned from the site, just from the forum.

I know someone serving a ban and whilst he considers what he said to be pretty minor and obviously tongue in cheek, he realises that it's their forum and they can take their ball home whenever they want.

And it's just the internet...

That's the respect point, if those doing the banning don't have any manners, how is it possible to respect them. One might say that deliberately aggressive posts equally lack manners.

I think you're making the fundamental schoolboy error of thinking you were meant to benefit

Perhaps the powers that be should consider corporal punishment in future. Do you think you'd get anything out of that?

Could we have a ban confession thread where anyone fresh back from a ban has to link to the post which earnt them the ban and state what they have learnt from being banned. Could be therapeutic (and entertaining).
It could be a sticky.

Bannings pander to the self righteous moaners who can't take a joke or a differing opinion, whilst others get away with what they like.

Not always, but usually.

But the offending posts are often removed.

My friend learnt that a previously well-used forum euphemism involving breaking through a rear entrance by striking it hard with one's foot, even when said in, what he thought was obvious, jest, is no longer acceptable.

@wrecker, I was banned for calling someone an idiot and avoiding the swear filter. Three days off and unless they have changed, for which I see no evidence to the contrary, I guess they're still an idiot and a self righteous one at that. 😀

A ban lets the normal users of the forum have a nice, quiet time without the banned person doing whatever it was that got them banned in the first place. If they feel sad because of a ban, then that's a bonus.

Most people get a warning first. Don Simon, for example has had 13 separate warnings against him in the last 12 months, so it's not like a ban is a surprise if it does follow.

Most people who are banned are done so as a result of complaints from other forum users. Any offensive posts that are seen as being left up because we approve or whatever, simply haven't been reported to the mods.

Hope that helps.

Who are you then? Hora?

To the OP - What's the point of cats? What's the point of white chocolate? What's the point of spending all your time on a MTB forum? It's a mistake to think in teleological terms about it all, IMO.

That figure I simply don't believe as I have only received in my inbox something like 4 warnings. More telling would be to see who has done this complaining to get the warnings sent.

Been listening to Radio 4 again? I was most impressed this morning when someone used the phrase "Aristotelian syllogisms" in a sentence.

You don't get that banter from Chris Moyles!

given that the for sale/wanted forums are a big part of this forum, and i expect there are a large number of "lurking" visitors who have not joined, Singletrack have to (IMO) consider all users, not just the forum regulars (or big hitters if you like). Further more, like it or not, the people at singletrack have bills to pay and mouths to feed, and I expect advertising goes some way towards paying them.

Now if I had a product or a shop, lets say specialising in Ti singlespeed 29ers with Alfine hubs and suspension adjustable from 100 to 200 mm at a knock down price, I would think advertising here would be a good thing, however, if singletrack was known as a place full of cross IT workers and underemployed engineers, i might not want my product associated with that.

Likewise, if I were considering a premium membership on the grounds that this place is a resourse of immense wisdom (and opinion) on all topics bike related and less so, then this would also bring money to Todmorden for Chipps & co, I might be put off by some of the recent "un-pleasentness" and take my money elsewhere. Those "other" sites may not feature the same adverts as this site does, and those companies may feel the effect, and take their business else where...

I like the forum, I like the sarcasm, gentle abuse and mixed opinions. But it is a mountain bike forum, run by a mountain bike magazine, which is run for profit (and love I expect). I don't like bannings, bit this isn't a democracy, you don't have the right to free speech here and the mods can (and will) do whatever they like.

As I say, I like the forum as it is, and would prefer it to stay the way it is, and if that means banning people who upset the status quo (who'd mess with Rossi?) then so be it.

13 warnings is impressive, its probably bad to admit such a thing but i have the same frustrating-to-admit respect for dondon right now as i did the naughty kid in school who always got sent out the classroom for telling the teachers he couldn't be bothered with homework instead of making bad excuses like the rest of us.

Maybe some warnings are so severe that the count as multiple warnings?
It'd be good to see sweary, comically disproportionate abusive warnings from the mods. Just to antagonize like.

He knows that now, in fact he knew it at the time, but he thought that the context in which he used it had a certain comic quality.

He would of course never advocate actually doing what he suggested (well, he would the bit that led up to the phrase, that was quite gentlemanly), and he thought that was obvious but obviously not. He now knows better, and that's surely the point of the banning.

My original persona got a lifetime ban for suggesting the STW UI was a bit poor on another forum - yep not even a post on this one. I even got hate mail from die hard STWers who were so upset by my comments (which were very very mild). I then got a long letter from the original forum coder, who was so upset that someone had suggested his creation was less than perfect.

The whole thing was just insane - some people take life and the internet especially way too seriously!

So as far as I can work out, bannings are much more about bruised egos than anyone doing anything offensive....

I had a post removed and an email from the Mods because someone reported something as racism which very clearly was not.

It's ironic because I was pointing out the hypocricy of patronising people of colour.

Doubly ironic because it was TJ I was having a pop at.

Triply ironic because TJ had a warning/banning for doing exactly the same thing and then moaning about that.

And I'm pretty sure it was TJ that did the complaining, wasnt it chummy?

I've had a few in a week after a mod clamp-down, 3 bans in recent months too?

Much of what I did is also done by others with no post-removal or bannings.

McBoo - I was not banned. I was warned off using a certain phrase that I had used ironically and is infact the name of one of the posters on here.

If you were banned then in the eyes of the mods you deserved it and you do not get banned for a first offence usually. I do not complain or moan if I get warned or banned.

so it was you who reported me was it 🙂

It's been a bit quiet I thought after the mass bannings after the bike show and did wonder if they were having a bit of a clean up splurge, I've come to accept the bans here, didn't like it at first since none of the other forums I visit save one are moderated and none as harshly as this one.

It certainly has the air of the classroom about it which is hardly surprising if you consider the provenance.

I've never been warned before a ban, it just happens and often when I least expect it, kind of just when I thought I'd settled in and had found the 'flow' of the place.

I think I've had about five bans in the four months or so I've been here so I'm on par for that 13 in 12 record if it is a target. I can't remember exactly what they're for, the last was swear filter avoidance which is a tad childish imv

Then again as I said else where, there are lots of children here. ( Children = anyone under 39).

The worse thing for me however was being told I'd caused someone to be banned, that really upset me so the next ban I accepted as Karma.

It does however artificially alter the demographic a tad, making it a cosy warm feely place for lefty kids who can't ride good, rather than the traditional rufty tufty sweary laddish culture that used to be the norm for off road biker types, so it is unique from that perspective.

What should happen, is a place for us to go when we are banned, where we can commiserate with one another and tell tales about teacher without him caning us or putting us in detention.

It's just finding a similar style of forum I guess, there's a newish one not populated on that imbike mag, probably have the effect of winding them up more though, then we'd end up having our user name totally destroyed and all trace of our existence exterminated.. 😯

really? when did I confirm that? I seriously do not remember the incident. You do seem to imagine and awful lot of stuff about me. You are also often pretty personaly offensive

I never used to report people much at all. Only for blatant "isms" occasionally. However on discovering that the mods seem to at least in part base banning on the number of reports I have reported a lot more when they are being personally offensive as its the right wing ranters that didn't get the bans as us lefties didn't report.

Am I the odd one out then, I've never been banned or even had a warning? Maybe it's cos I try to consider what I'm saying in the light of "real life" and how other people might interpret my words? I don't always get it right, to be fair, but I try...
