I'll start. Cold, wet and windy and I couldn't be arsed trudging out to the garage. A 1TB hard drive was within reach, it worked well to knock a few dowels in ...
iPhone
Not me, but seen one of my mates trying to hit a cam net peg into the ground in the Iraqi desert using his chest plate from his body armour.
I used one of my mums vases once to smack a nail, turns out its worth a couple of grand.
She's still not forgive me and quite often brings it up in anger.
I regularly use the side of my fist in the absence of a hammer within easy reach, I always regret it.
Usually pots and pans that are nearby (i.e when camping).
It's a sure fir way to damage said pots and pans..
DrP
In true STW fashion, a bit off an Audi. Suspension arm tbp
I needed it to undo the damage i had done with it a bit earlier.
Alternatively
and one of these
I only dropped it 10 feet.... amazing what 15 tonne of steel can do to 10mm steel plate and concrete... and also quite amazing how far away you feel the thud....
I've often used inappropriate objects as hammers, however, I always make sure they're a) up to the job in question, and b) cheap enough for it not to matter a damn if they turn out not to be. Lumps of metal, wood, stone, screwdriver handles...
Intelligent bodgit design. 😉
My watch. Thankfully not a super expensive watch but it was a bad idea all the same, particularly as it was on my wrist on the time and I, in the most feable way you can imagine was trying to hammer in a picture hook with the back of my wrist smack on the glass face of my watch. It didn't work and nor did my watch after.
While working under my scabby Focus, trying to get the heatshield off, all the stupid flat nut things were seized and needed tapped off. Discovered I couldn't reach the hammer, so in pure frustration decided to headbutt the chisel. It worked, inasmuch as anything that leaves you with a dent in your head can be considered to have worked.
Johnson's baby shampoo bottle... Ended in tears despite what it says on the bottle.
I've read somewhere that a Champagne bottle, full or empty, makes an adequate hammer. Somehow I never seem to have one handy.
I once used a broom handle to put a star nut in a steerer. Had to stand on a chair to hit the top of it. The broom handle needed replacing.
my hand,...several times,....short term memory loss 😀
DeWalt drill, the ladder was that precarious that I wasn't going down it to pick up the hammer I'd just dropped.
An olympus c-7070, the camera won and is still used many years later.
LDV Minibus to smash an air duct out of the way when I got stuck in an underground car park.
Sadly the box section ducting won and the roof was trashed....
Northwind, you're an absolute star
I once used my old Vito and a chain to pull a tree stump which came out reluctantly but with some speed straight through the rear windscreen.
Working on aircraft I have found the best thing to fix them sometimes is a swift blow with a nice ball pein. More often than not there is no such tool in sight and I found chocks to be very useful. Aswel as a nice size 9 or even jumping up and down on a faulty part. I have used power set plugs. And even one day in afghan a large rock. Thank christ that im RAF and not working on your average passenger jet as joe public would have a fit
Defib Kind of hoping they're not that expensive when bought in bulk...
I actually had to use a rock a couple of wells ago at antur stiniog to knock my bearings back in as they keep on pushing out.
Baby scales for a picture hook.
Could have used the baby, but the mother wouldn't let me.
£3000 Panasonic Toughbook and a Makita drill have been used in the past. For tougher jobs an iron punner has been used.
I used to use my HTC Sensation and Desire HD all the time. Surprisingly good!
Slowoldgit I can confirm that a champagne bottle does make a suitable hammer as last week while putting my daughters high chair together the only thing to hand to knock in the dowels was a champagne bottle from a week or so earlier when we moved into the new house
I have also used the battery pack from my Mikita power drill on a number of occasions. In hind sight I should probably stop using it for metallic objects and just use it for the odd rawl plug.
I once used my fist to get windows XP unfrozen.
The cast I had on when I broke my wrist was quite good, although it probably didn't help the healing process...
My Patek Phillipe.
Store I once worked in we used Meto price guns, made a useful hammer stand-in on many occasions. Now where I'm at we get Sato plastic price guns (come as a "freebie" when you order a trazillion boxes of labels) they are a pain to reload and are no use as a hammer!.
