I know its speed related, but in practical terms do both devices need to be USB 3.0 in order for it to work? For context, I have a TV with a USB slot and want to connect an external hard drive for recording programmes. The TV's USB slots are both 2.0 but most hard drives seem to be 3.0. Will it work or should I just buy an older style hard drive?
Cheers
USB 3 drive will work in a USB 2 port but will only be as fast as the port.
USB3>usb3 is the only way to get full speed.
just faster and all are backwards compatible with the speed being dictated by the lower device.

MOST USB devices are backwards compatible, so a USB 3 device should work with a USB 2 input.
FWIW: USB 3 allows simultaneous reading and writing and uses less power.
Thanks all
