It's not a scrapper outright, but it's a 52 plate Astra 1.6 that's surplus to requirements, but isn't currently in a saleable condition.

The exhaust manifold needs looking at as it's really blowing (when I get time..) but if it's more than just a flexi pipe or something, then it's going to be circa £3-400 to fix.
The car, I reckon, is worth £500 max.. (we buy any car puts it at £280 in working order!)
It's recently had 2 new tyres put on to get through an MOT, and the body is in fairly good nick.

If it were simply 'ok but not needed' then I'd sell, but I'm not sure how the most 'cost effective' way of disposing of it is...
Fix and sell (possibly zero gain)
Split for parts
SCrapper....???

I'm tempted to take up banger racing for...oooh..one race, just for the fun of it!

I had a car just like this, needed work to get it in a drivable state so I put it on GumTree for £400 being brutally honest and people were biting my arm off. I was stunned. I couldn't work out if they were trying to buy it to do up and sell for a profit or thought they were getting a cheap car to run around in.

There's no such thing as a car 'that isn't in saleable condition'! As per the others, stick it on ebay. I'd put it up with a buy it now and best offer.

Soma rich - what costs you 4/500 quid to do is another mans bread and butter

Ive had some in that past that scare folk - like clutches - if you have the tools and knowledge on certaincars its not a heart ache- i have had other cars ive walked away from for less but knowing that to fix the problem will take lots of time and money and still not guarantee a fix- like our golf with alloy ti nitride coated pistons - block was oversized to allow for expansion so it always burnt oil and used water , looking about any new engine i could get was likely to be in the same state so i walked,

Changed the clutch in my hyundai for a days work and 120 quid clutch pack before selling it for 750. Scrappies offered me 150.

A manifold unless its a really cramped engine bay wouldnt phase me , if it was taxed and tested youll get reasonable money from the right person . Hell i got 400 quid for a golf with a melted engine- non runner

We Buy Any Car COM has valued our car at £50 - still a runner though and I reckon we'll do our best to keep it so - enough gubbins (tow bar stuff, roof bars) we have that are tailored to it that it's worth it.

I also reckon that if we bought another car of uncertain pedigree (while we haven't had ours from new, it's a 1996 plate and we've had it since 1999, so eek coming on for 18 years old) we'd be splashing out say (easily) £5k and depreciation at 20% - that's £1k / year that's available for maintenance..

On the other hand, our car can't depreciate any more 🙂

THink I'll look into the "braaaap-braaaap" a bit more, then price to sell!

Cheers all!

If I had a large plot of land to play on, I'd don my full face and get a whole day's 'fun' out of the thing..has to be worth £500 just for the laughs!

Someone on here a couple of weeks back rather carelessly admitted to flooding their heap with a hosepipe and then claiming for (river) flood damage on the insurance?

I tried to sell my old Focus, didn't get a sniff, drove it til it broke then sold it as a non-runner for about 75% what I hoped to get for it as a runner with tax and MOT. Ebay is weird.

Sell it to Hora? He'd only drive it for a few miles before chopping it in, so probably wouldn't even pick up most of the issues.

400 for a gasket? Ring round local garages. 10mins work for 6 new prices. Not all indies are created equal.

If the tyres were the only advisories? Fix the manifold and keep. When I realised the extent of rust on my Puma I sold it for spares.

Everything is in a saleable condition. I sold my old Focus for £50 just to get shut. Was perfectly reliable but needed some attention. I probably could have got a few hundred quid for it but it needed taxing, MOT, tyres and a few other things so I cut my losses and advertised it for £50. I was inundated. Unbelievably some cheeky lighters tried to haggle! But in the end it went to a nice chap with handy spanner skills so he was going to fix her up and use as a family car, so it went to a good home, and I'm sure it is giving him good reliable service.

£50? You'd get 150-200 all day long collected by any local scrap company. Just one call.

My passat seems to be just above that territory. Needs a service shortly but will run and run for not a lot of money. Have it on Autotrader and just had my first call from an eastern european chap who wants to buy it for cash to 'export' it apparently. I'm reluctant to provide my address as it all seems a little scammish. Am I being too wary?

I'm sure you're right Hora. That's why I'm not a salesman! But in this case I couldn't bring myself to scrap it as it was fundamentally a good reliable car. I preferred to see it go to a decent home. It owed me nothing.
