A bedroom in my father in laws house on the ground floor has a damp smell in it. It has two internal walls (hall&kitchen) and two external, the floorboards were lifted a few years ago and a new concrete floor was poured and a wooden floor installed on top which shows no signs of warping. There are no signs of dampness on the walls just a smell which vastly improves after a dose of a dehumidifier, there are however signs of dampness in the kitchen (this was a flat roof extension built god knows when) above the kitchen units and inside the units themselves (black mouldy type stuff). Also my father I laws kitchen is the only kitchen I know that when you store salt it becomes very damp!?
the mouldy stuff is the smell. Probably due to condensation caused by not enough ventilation.
Why was a concrete floor laid - is it a old house whose ventilation was never designed for concrete floors?
Um damp? 😉

It's an old house, there's no ventilation slots in the external walls in the bedroom. There's no mouldy stuff in the bedroom...
Is there an Indian Burial Ground below the house?
m_f you beat me to it ! How long since you laid eyes on your mother-in-law ?
Inadaquate External drainage can cause issues too, In my kitchen I found the earth around the foundations to be hardpacked against the walls; dug it out to 6-12inches filled it with gravel with a gradual run off damp issue was resolved. But check ventilation and for poltergiests 🙂
