I was just doing some washing up using apple orchard flavour fairy liquid and received a strong memory of apple flavour nerds back in the 80s. If I remember rightly they came in duel flavour packets and the apple came teamed with strawberry with Frankenstein on the packet. I am going to do a search now to see if I can get some.
Just for reminiscence which sweets did you enjoy as a nipper or still do now for some long ride sugar hits or a cheeky suck in the workshop?
I used to love opal fruits as a child.
I remember those, then the name changed to starburst. I remember the ads suggesting different names they could use - Chimpy chomps was much better. I think this thread is going to increase my sugar intake above recommended guidelines as i will have to re sample the old favourites!
Here it is, it was Chimpy Chompies.
Even just the name "apple orchard flavour" brings back memories of that period, it's funny. Curly wurlies ftw though. I don't know if they were actually larger then or it was just me being smaller but back then they were king
Yeah, I'm sure they were long enough to drag along the ground in '84!
Edit: And Wagon Wheels were big enough to put on a wagon!
Midget gems, particularly the black ones.
Sherbet fountains, and sherbet dibdab.
Sweet peanuts.
Ooft.
Rhubarb & Custard for sweets
Cabana for bars
Cola cubes and chocolate cushions for me when I was a nipper.
My teeth are in a dreadful state.
Ruffle bars.
Moffat toffee (not actually toffee) reminds me of sitting on french beaches in the 70s.
You can still buy nerds, they disappeared for a while due to the glass incident.
For me it’s aniseed balls and double lolly’s
Id completely forgotten about Midget Gems. I used to get 1/4 of Cola Cubes and a 1/4 of Pineapple Chunks combo. I suppose what with Brexit we will be getting those measurements back!
I'm not a fan of aniseed these days, must have been the absinth excesses. I have never experienced Ruffle bars or Moffat Toffee. I shall have to go looking or will I need a time machine?
Going into town now so I will keep 'em peeled for Nerds, I suspect Mini and Micro will approve.
Edit: Rubard and Custard is probably the only boiled type sweet i eat as Mrs Sims handbag is always armed with a bag.
Bonbons
Cola cubes
Rhubarb and custard
Herbal soothers
Liquorice blackcurrant
Lemon sherbert's
Whatever happened to newsagents selling sweets for 50p per 1/4? I can inhale a bag of harribo but it's just not the same.
Black Jacks
Drumsticks
Refreshers - the chews, but the fizzy sweets are not bad either
Fruit Salads
Wham bars
Highland Toffee
Pineapple chunks
Flying saucers
Lemon sherbets
I also love wine gums, but it seems they can trigger my migraines... doesn’t stop me from trying them every once in a while.
And yes, my mouth contains more than its fair share of amalgam.
Chelsea whoppers. No idea what they were made of. Lovely.
Fruit Salads. And Blackjacks.
Percy Pigs
Drumstick squashies
Rhubarb and custard
Mojos. Two for a penny. Bargain.
Chewing nuts.
All sweeties.
Get them in my mouth.
Black jacks
I have a bottle of gin thats flavoured with them. Just popping the top takes me back.
Were schwalbes design team trying to tell us something?
I use to love Cabana bars.
Sherbert lemons
Fizzy cola bottles
Shrimps
White mice
Still partial to them now......
White mice used to come in strawberry version as well, they were ace!
I preferred the much healthier cherry menthol tunes or victory vs
Heavy smokers use a fisherman’s friend.
Green Gorgo bars, not as fashionable as Wham bars and very sour if I remember correctly.
Coconut mushrooms. Mmmmm.
20p mixup
Back in the day my fave sweeties were
Blackjacks, Fruit Salad, Wham bars and jawbreakers. Chocolate wise, Treets and peanut Banjos.
@bsims, those Green Gorgo bars, did they have the black fizzy bits in as opposed to the rainbow coloured bits in a Wham?
Current favourite sweeties are Swedish Fish. The proper Swedish ones, not the abysmal American ones. They are truly rank. Love a herbal tablet, too. Always have.
Caramac
Chocolate limes
Pontefract cakes
White bonbons
Toffo
Rainbow drops....
spangles (proper original ones, not the fake remakes from a few years ago)
or black jacks
and for the worst... parma violets
@johnyrobertson, Yes, nice and sour, not quite like the super sour gobstoppers but enough to make you dribble.
The sweets that looked like cigarettes when I was litte, then sherbet dabs and pineaapple cubes. I'm now into jelly beans.
I can't believe nobody is amazed that there is a street called Wham Bar Drive.
That was not a mock-up. It's real.
Oh - jap desserts and cola cubes for me. And Barker & Dobson blackcurrant and liquorice.
We’re just immune after the place name thread😀
Flying saucers, but at the moment I’m addicted to Waitrose Sour Pastilles. Two packets for £2.
Fry's Turkish Delight. And still going strong, thankfully.
Many and varied but keep coming back to wine gums. Sourcing can be problematic and changing suppliers have led to the relegation of previous faves M&S , lack of white ones rules out Maynard, fortunately Home Bargains are currently doing excellent wine gums for £1.99 a kilo. My stash at the moment is heavier than me, but that may change soon.
Spira
I was on Jelly Babies for my 'emergency' supplies on the bike but have now moved to Maoam (or is it Moaom?) Pinballs - Jesus Christ, they are addictive!
I could literally eat my own bodyweight in refreshers. They're lush!
Does anyone remember 'glees'? They were little round opal fruits in a coated shell.
Lemon bon bons, blackcurrant chewits, opal fruits were migraine starters must have been the dodgy e's
Floral Gums - very much love or demented hatred for them ;o)
The first chocolate bar I remember giving me a rush of 'I need this now' was a star bar.
Think they must have come out early to mid 90s and could possibly be the best taste experience of my life. Can still taste the sample slice that I was given whilst walking round Morrisons as a twenty something looking for food lol.
