i really can't remember the last time i listened to a record, but yesterday on an old sony turntable my dad got me years ago from the carboot i sat down and played ziggy stardust all the way through and really enjoyed it.
so, amp and speakers i have asked on here about before now, i quite like vintage kit, but if i went looking for a used turntable (vintage or more modern) can anyone give me some recommendations. i'd be looking to spend maybe 100quid. not heaps.
70s and some 80s consumer stuff can be excellent quality. Pioneer belt-drives like the 112 are superb value and quality.
House I stayed at in the summer had a nice Project turntable. Liked it so much I bought one when we got home. Was only £200ish new so I guess they go for £100ish used. Had top reviews on What HiFi...
Project Debut. Nice turntable, should be very reasonable. I
Yup, Project. Don't forget your amplifier must have a turntable specific input otherwise you will also need a phono stage which boosts and equalises the TT output so an amp can use it.
thanks for mentioning that, i'll bear that in mind. the amp i have does, its an old yamaha one that i bought in '90 or thereabouts, very nice sound imho, but its got an issue with the selector so i'm going to replace it at some stage and slowly upgrade the whole system. i was hoping to do it earlier this year, a chap here on stw had a lovely amp for sale when i was asking about amps last winter, but my van's turbo had other thoughts what i should do with some spare change i had in spring.
One where you don't have to fart around changing belts to get the right speed! You'll never use it otherwise.

Forgot Revolver.
They're nice if you can find one.
Kinda OT; can anyone recommend a cheap pre-amp (?£20-30), other than a Behringer PP400, which I am just returning as faulty (0,1 or 2 channels work on internal whim)?
Another vote for a Project Debut turntable. I got one from an advert on Gumtree for £30 but then had to re-wire the tone arm and buy a new cartridge/stylus. So all in it cost me about £70ish. Brilliant turntable for the money.
You do have to manually change the belt to adjust the speed but I very rarely play 7" records on this player. Might not be ideal for you if you plan to though.
Rega Planar 2 or the equivalent NAD (can't remember what is was called.)
Given that you mention listening to some vinyl yesterday, I assume you have an amp already with a Phono level input?
You may as well but a 1200. If you're not going to use it much at least you can justify buying it as a design classic/investment.
I have a Sansui Sr 222 that is fortyfive years old and still going strong, they pop up on ebay quite cheap too. Bought my dad a Rega Planar a few years back that was very reasonably priced thought.
I bagged a Thorens TDK 166MK2 for £80 on eBay about a year ago, stuck a AT95e onto the arm and bought a Rega phono stage for £80
Hooked up to the Audiolab Pre and power amps and my AVI speakers ( all second hand bargaintastic 90's expensive stuff) and it rocks,
Really shouldn't have sold my Planar 3 and Rega Brio amp though. Still miss them.
I'm looking to sell a Numark TT500 turntable. Perhaps a bit overkill for your needs, but a nice bit of kit. I also have a pair of Gale Gold Monitors and a Cambridge Audio AM10 topaz amp. I've turned to the dark side and am going Sonos to save space.
