What umbrella?

Along with the multiple what Sandvik axe or Skoda Estate do I need threads, for complete non cycling middle aged STWness I think we need a What Umbrella thread!

I have an unbranded, multi coloured, large 'golf' umbrella - no idea where we got it from but it keeps rain off me when walking doggo and has survived fairly windy conditions. Despite it fulfilling its design brief I'm concerned that it's not artisan enough and doesn't really match my Fjallravenesque outdoor image. So in traditional STW manner - recommend what umbrella you have!

I don't own one. But in the K-drama "I am not a robot" the female lead invents an umbrella that changes from transparent to opaque by pressing a button on the handle.

Comes in very handy around episode 6.

In traditional STW manner, I'll answer a completely different question, and suggest a wide-brimmed hat. 🙂

Something in waxed cotton for the artisanal look (eg: original_the-wilderness-waxed-cotton-hat.jpg (1024×808) (notonthehighstreet.com)) or a Seattle Sombrero for the more niche approach (Outdoor Research Hat Mens Small Seattle Sombrero Sahale Gore-Tex Rain USA Made | eBay)

Blunt, very STW

Edit: I retract my suggestion, dakuan wins with the Airedale Terrier handle

I was about to say Blunt. Was given one years ago by family in NZ and it's brilliant. Not sure I'd spend £75 on one though.

I keep a Blunt Classic in the office (for trips to the local coffee shop...) but yeah not sure I'd recommend spending the money on one (it does stand up to strong winds well though)

We have a mercedes umbrella.

It really is a step up. I mean it achieves the same result but the smooth smooth damped action during deployment is enough to make me put it back down and fire it off again.

Obvs it will end up left somewhere for it's next owner to have similar revelatory experience.

I am not an umbrella fan.

However, I did get my SO one of these a few years back. It has performed very well and would be the only umbrella I’d contemplate getting if I got off my high horse.

I see others have made similar recommendations.

Hmm I HATE umbrellas and I see that someone (Blunt et al) has attempted to address my hatred.

However I still HATE umbrellas and would rather get a bit wet or wear a Waterproof coat - Bah and Humbug :o)

Not only that, there's a dedicated umbrella drawer under the front seat.  (Or at least, there was on mine.)

I recognise that. I was left an MG umbrella while marshalling a DH event, and so that is our umbrella of choice. Not only failing in the artisan scores, I think it scrapes the 'Chinese Temu' test... But it was free.

If I had the inclination I would go a flip brolly - something I had to purchase as a 'secret santa' to a family member a few years ago:

As does our Fabia - a wee hidden plastic 'holder' rather than a drawer however.

I like the Blunt brolleys mainly due to the repairability......but at £120 for the large they are a bit spendy.

Our new Skoda Octavia estate comes with an umbrella for peak STW points.

£500?

Surely it should be a Peaty's one? in  fact I might put one on my Christmas list.

https://peatys.co.uk/products/umbrella

Fulton ones look fancy though.

I currently have two Slazenger branded (or maybe Dunlop?!) £2.99 umbrellas from Sports Direct that I bought in around 2010 and are still going strong & being regularly used when standing around at my daughter's footie training.
They don't deal with wind very well, but when they turn inside out they seem to just bend, so have never been wrecked.

I bought my mum a relatively expensive (£35) teeny pop-up brolly that was advertised as suitable for windy conditions as she walks 10m-15m a day no matter the conditions but on first use it blew inside out and burst a spar, if anyone has recommendations for something similar that will fit in her jacket/bag then I’d be grateful.

I doubt mine was hand stitched by blind Peruvian nuns from lynx whiskers, but it’s unfazed by windy conditions:

The hatred for umbrellas is news to me. I always walk out with mine in the rain rather than - well - not.

For boys, a stormproof & tasteful golf umbrella is not just rain protection and a gentlemanly bit of attire, but can be whipped out from the boot to protect our other halves from frizzy hair and escort them to the entrance of Sainsbury's or 'spoons like they're a film star.

They're brilliant, and any Fulton is the answer.

If an umbrella is good enough for Nick Crane while walking Europe north to south it's good enough to me.

Also, of course a bike packer back in the 80s.

Tbh, the Ducati one ^^ is a wee bit short to use as a walking aid.

Most golf umbrellas fail at the slightest gust of wind, even the twin layered versions.

The hatred for umbrellas is news to me. I always walk out with mine in the rain rather than – well – not.

I don’t any more, because I got thoroughly fed up with fighting the bastard thing for supremacy when it’s raining and there’s a 50knt wind, it’s impossible to see anyone walking towards me because they’re all fighting with their brollies, and there’s overgrown hedges and cars parked on the pavement making it impossible to squeeze through the minuscule gap thoughtfully left by the car drivers.

Easier to stuff a cheap £20 Peter Storm packable jacket in a bag just in case, and more stays dry anyway. Doesn’t drip all over the floor when you get home, either.

Does it magically dry itself whilst scrunched up on the floor?

I have a London Undercover in black with white/black fine houndstooth lining, think it’s a classic or city gent model, bought it years ago so they may have changed the names and they don’t do that lining now but loads to choose from, has a one piece wooden shaft and is certainly well made, would probably buy a more funky colour if buying again.

Full length, none of this folding nonsense for strutting around town. I did bend a strut in an epic storm but just bent it back, keep meaning to drop it off at the shop for a new strut to be fitted.

edit, it’s this one  https://londonundercover.co.uk/products/black-and-white-houndstooth-classic-umbrella?taxon_id=57

The Skoda holder is brilliant until you have to use it and the brolly is soaking...it can't dry in that holder.

I've a work branded golf brolly that does seem to withstanding a decent blow, but I never use it. Partner does when she can be bothered to pack it in the car with her.

I've started using a hood, that seems to be transformative! Rain stays of my glasses far longer than when I didn't cover my head! Since going pretty bald, a good has proven to be a useful thing.

I use an umbrella so I can still wear shorts and a t-shirt all winter

Doesn’t stop the wind, rain and cold blowing underneath and making everything from mid thigh cold and wet though.
Utterly useless on a bike as well.

I’ve got a number of different size umbrellas, but I never use them because they’re a royal pain in the ass, they blow all over the place, catch on overhanging branches and bushes, and if there’s a headwind, you can’t see where the hell you’re going!

And I’m back to wearing shorts, and a tee shirt, although I wear appropriate clothing over the top of my tee.
