I have a small, recently out of date, fire extinguisher (the powder type that comes with caravans) that I need to dispose of, but have absolutely no idea what to do with it.
Does it need to go to a specialist disposal place or can I just set it off down the garden then take it to my local tip for recycling?
Any other suggestions are also welcome.

It'll make a right mess if it's dry powder. I'd fire it off into a deep bin. But once it's empty yeah, just take it to the tip.

Just because it's out of date doesn't mean it won't work. Does it have a pressure gauge? If it has and it's still full, no reason to junk it. If not, keep it around somewhere you don't have an extinguisher currently, e.g. garden shed. It may save your bacon (figuratively!) one day, not having to run to wherever your 'in-date' one is kept.
If you are going to keep for "just in case" invert it regularly to prevent the powder caking at the bottom

Having recently set off an old, but still pressurised powder extinguisher i can say without fear of contradiction it makes a spectacular mess….

I may relocate it to the garage in that case, although there's no bacon to save in there* and pick up a new one for the van.

An out of date one right next to you is better than an in date one you have to go and get from somewhere else

Is dry powder the best option? It isn't great in an enclosed space and can contaminate everything, computers, clothes, food, the lot

I had a little one for the car years ago, don’t remember what it was filled with but I took it to the local household waste recycling place who took it for me.

Make a tubless inflator, somethig along these lines -

Empty it and fill it with sand/water so it can be used as a door stop somewhere with a particularly officious H&S bod.
Let it off in such a way that you can contain it.
Then maybe convert it into a homemade Airshot?
I've got a riding buddy that has done this. I wouldn't dare, but he's handier than me.
