I'm heading to the US in a couple of weeks and will have a spare weekend, finishing work in Houston Friday and need to be in Phoenix Monday pm. Half thinking about hiring a car and driving. Anyone any good ideas about sites to see, things to do on route? I'm could also stay in Houston or Phoenix for the weekend and fly, Possibly too hot for a Scottish person to be cycling!

I thought you meant Houston, Renfrewshire and the Phoenix Park, Linwood. I was going to suggest the OnX Leisure centre for a swim and a coffee

You must go to San Antonio. It is a stunning city, when you can really experience Texan history by visiting the Alamo and the Spanish missions.

there's excellent riding in Sedona and Flagstaff. If you get up early the temperature might be bareable, or a bit of night riding?

Otherwise, the only thing to do in this weather in Phoenix is tubing (which is fun, but not so much on your own). don't bother driving..

No, it's really not. It's a dull place, with a hateful tourist trap of a "River Walk". Yes, the Alamo and Missions are interesting, but San Antonio is a dreadful place. Sorry.

Oh, and Houston? Leave. As soon as you can.

Just fly to Phoenix on the Friday. Go out in Tempe and catch a live band.

Have a problem en route to Phoenix just so can call someone in Houston.

That's a bloody long drive. Won't you spend most of your time in the car? Texan scenery doesn't exist, but I guess there's more to see as you get towards Phoenix.

I'm only familiar with Texas, but my default recommendations as you head away from Houston:
- Fredericksburg (a small German town) good for pubs and craft beer)
- San Antonio for history
- Austin for night life and Barton Springs (thermal pool)

Holy shit man - that's a day's drive with not much to look at. Seriously, fly!

West Texas, interesting in a perverse way, small towns with nothing going on. It will be brutally hot, it was 120 in Phoenix today

Border land can be weird. I love road trips in the States but this wouldn't be top of my list.

grand canyon is a day trip from phoenix, as is vegas - or fly direct to LA or san diego - lots in both of them to lose yourself for a weekend, then it's an 6-8 hour drive back to phoenix on Sunday night. Much preferable to phoenix, or (it sounds like), houston as well

1 tip - don't try to walk to the bottom of the canyon and back up, in a day, in this weather. The top will be a lovely 10 degrees first thing, the bottom will be almost 40, with a mile of vertical gain over 13 miles left ahead of you. Don't ask me how I know this ๐Ÿ˜‰

The Astros are one of the best and most exciting teams in baseball this year. Check if they're playing when you're there?

As above - fly to Phoenix and drive to Grand Canyon and return via Sedona. Driving in Texas is mind numbingly boring. Towns like San Antonio and Fredericksburg seem interesting only in comparison to Houston.

Thanks all. Think I will pass on the full houston Phoenix road trip in favour of day trip from Phoenix

White Sands, the missile testing range (forget what its called), Roswell, steak for every meal.

I like the place and I wouldn't bother. Sedona trip would be my choice.

Unless you're into stargazing. That would be worth doing.
