Got him to come around today and explain himself. He has accepted he shouldn't have done it as we did only ask him to weed. He couldn't explain why he had done something so drastic, just said it would grow back in a few years!
Anyway bottom line is, after some pressure he's agree to pay for a new mature lilac tree and hollybush

Cant speak for (against) all travellers(gypsies). But the ones in Im related to are a very shady bunch indeed.
...and they're not cheap...Result. All happy then.
It is difficult as one man's understanding of tidy my garden up is different to the next man's as is one man's idea of a weed...

I presume your neighbour (who quite obviously gave the instructions) will pay his mate back anyway.
It's not ever so clear in the pick, but the gardener might not have done the proper standard of cut on that tree. Have a look at this...
