spend more you cheapskate and get an Ipad. You won't regret it.

I had a Hudl, it died after a year or so due software updates. Currently have a Lenovo Yoga and it's getting slow and failing also , despite various resets etc.

Next one will be an iPad. Wife and kids ones are older than my Hudl and working perfectly, probably more used as well....

Seriously though, the one really techy member of my family has an NVIDIA and loves it. The rest of us civilllians all have iPads.

Slightly over budget, but either a Nexus 7 2013 with a wireless charger (charger saved the life of my ~10 month old one recently, after the mini USB port died), or an Nvidia Shield.

If you get the Nexus, you have the option of "borrowing" it for rides, if you have not got your own Android GPS device. Strava works with it, albeit the GPS is not always accurate.

Planning on getting the wife a new tablet for xmas, so am interested to see what comes up on here.

The Nvidia Shield's strength is its gaming capability, especially if you have have a relatively high-end Nvidia graphics card in your pc (something about streaming games to the tablet, with a good quality picture and little lag).

Its designed as a gaming tablet. It is also a very good android tablet as well. Combine them both and considering the relatively low price it's a very good option.

Another vote for the Nvidia Shield. The old Nexus 9 tablets are nice if you can pick one up cheap second hand.

iPad Pro 9.7". He says typing on said iPad.
Though clearly over budget, so maybe not.

On a more serious note there are some interesting stats on tablets

Vastly more Android tablets are sold - Apple have about 25% of the market

Yes, those figures are old but they were the first that showed up. I've seen much more recent and from different sources. They suggest that most Android tablets don't actually get used very much (or at least not for browsing the web)

I have two ipads sat unused in my testing device pile in my office. I use an android tablet. It's nicer to use.

It only tells you that rich metropolitan types who spend all day online buy ipads.

That reveals more about your prejudices than the data. You could equally interpret it as Android devices are bought by people with more money than sense as having bought a device they don't use it. (Cost per hour online is going to be a lot lower for an iPad).

My guess is that the Android sales figures are skewed to the cheap devices and the cheap devices are crap. At the high end the tablets are good but Android share at the high end is low. The high second hand value of iPads suggests that an old second hand iPad is a better experience/more useful than a new cheap Android tablet.

I know the cheap Android tablets that my SIL bought sit around unused but the nephews play with their iPod touches continuously.

Or maybe people are just completely irrational and overpay for crap Apple devices. What do I know.

All of my nephews have Android tablets and probably spend 95% of the time spent on them playing games like clash of clans or Minecraft.

My Wife and I have got an LG GPad each and they are brilliant.
Nice screen, quick, good battery life, expandable memory, USB on the go.

Have fiddled about with ipads but don't see that they do anything the GPad doesn't do.....but then I don't have any other Apple stuff so probably part of the reason.

It was only after reading this thread that I discovered none of the Kindle Fire range does anything like 1920x1080 resolution, I badly assumed "HD" models were aptly named, should have been branded "HD ready." 😆

The 1920x1200 screen on the Nexus 7 2013 isn't perfect by any means, but the picture and sound quality is great for streaming the likes of Amazon Video on.

Maybe the Apple users spent all their cash on iPads therefore need to use it for everything online, whereas Android users are more likely to have laptops/notebooks or PCs as well as they are more sensible.

Interesting stats on usage and seems a bit silly to just look at tablets together.

I don't use my Hudl2 or iPad very much because my Android Phone is large enough to view the Web and interact with it so the faff of going and getting something else outweighs the benefits of a big screen. Iphone users, if we are looking at 2013, would have been made by a large number of people with tiddly little 4/4s/5 screens so an iPad would have been preferable.

Or maybe people with Android tablets had spare funds to also own a pc and use that instead? 😉

I wouldn't be afraid of Samsung anymore if my s7 is anything to go by, the changes made to the os by Samsung are barely noticeable.

User experience being hardware + O/S. I've used Android and I know there's nothing 'wrong' with it but any software can be crippled by H/W (my Uncle bought a cheap new Windows laptop this year running Win10 that is literally unusable even to browse the web. It's slower than the (cheap) 5 year old + laptop that they bought it to replace.

That's definitely a large part of it but it's still a really striking difference. iPhone users spend more time online than Android phone users (and from memory spend more) but it's more pronounced on tablets. I've seen the stat many times but never a conclusive answer to why. Early adopters buy/bought Apple, and later adopters use the web less? Suspect lots of contributions.

Definitely old but I've never had an Apples update really cripple a machine. My 7 year old iMac still ran well on the latest OS when i got rid of it. iPhone 4s and 5 (a 5/4 year old phone) runs perfectly well with the latest iOS.

Think you'll find the same thing happens. Did with my ipad 2 and my dad's iPad (3 I think).

Our 2 is now so slow that after typing in a web address, you have to sit and wait for the letters to appear one by one on the screen. Absolute shite.

Don't ignore a cheap Windows tablet. I've been using a Linx with windows 8, which was £100 about a year ago. Fine for most things, and had a free offer of Office for a year.
