What sofa for dogs?

One of my spaniels has just eaten a pen. As well as walking ink on the floor, he has covered my old leather sofa in it.

What is the best sofa material for dogs? I’ve always thought leather as it’s easier to clean.

It will, but as I need a new one, I thought I’d see what opinions were?

We use a sofa with machine washable and tumble dryer compatible covers and use a throw on it.

You can't avoid the mess so might as well make it easy to clean.

We've got leather and a throw/blanket on top.

One behind a door or baby gate!

Not a lot of leather on a dog. Suggest a chaise longe if it’s a really big dog, or a cushion if it’s small.

Second hand. No point spending lots of money on something that will get deeply ingrained with dirt.

Any sofa with a throw, and teach the dog that it's only allowed on the throw, and it's only allowed on the sofa if throw's on it, and it's been invited up.

If you have more than one sofa, teach the dog that it's only allowed on the one it's allowed on.

A decent throw/blanket is probably the best plan.

That's what I do anyway as you can wash it periodically and the sofa itself doesn't get damaged or smelly.

Red leather if possible

he has covered my old leather sofa in it.

That will come out. Plenty of pen removal products which are probably just acetone.

the leather sofa was old and second hand anyway, plus it had already been trashed by a very licky female spaniel. They are banned from sleeping in there too as she has a weak bladder. We have 2 dog gates.

Don't let the dog on the sofa, simple.

Rather depends on the dog. You pick your battles.

Sofa over 12 years old, seen many a dog on it. Humans have worn it more than dogs. Definitely leather in future for us.
