In a couple of hours I'll be going to get a smartphone. HTC Desire HD or Samsung Omnia? Or Nokia N8? Or what else?
I'll need it for the web, email and photos. Having used a Nokia E71 for years I'm drawn towards the N8 (I don't care about apps that much).
Please throw the info at me 🙂

HTC in my books.

Got a Hero here, running Android 2.2... love it.

The N8 is really nice... but I'd be wary of getting a Symbian phone as Nokia have moved to Microsoft. Might not be an issue if you aren't worried about apps (but then why get a smart phone?)

If you want something that can take a bit of abuse, consider the Motorola Defy. I can vouch for its water resistance

Out of that lot, with no other information provided, I'd say the Desire.

Do you actually mean the Omnia or Omnia II / Omnia 7? I can't see any compelling reason to buy the 'classic' Omnia, ever.

All three are very different OSes (WinMo, Android, Symbian) and that's not an easy thing to recommend / choose beyond personal preference.

Went to the shop, tried a few, didn't like any. Got the internet-only contract, the handset will wait. The C7 looks the business but they didn't have any in stock. I'll treat myself to something at later stages. Thanks for the suggestions anyway.

Did you try the Omnia 7. Loads of people on here rubbish the new Windows Phone OS because they've never used it, or are thinking of the old (and genuinely crap) Windows Mobile; you need to use it for a bit to appreciate how good it is.

Leaves Android and iOS years behind from a usability point of view.

Speaking as someone who has never used it, I sincerely doubt that!

(but my interest is suitably piqued).

Three Fish - that's pretty offensive even by STW standards.

Get A Orange san francisco unlock It for free at the link below , then take all the Orange branding crap of It . Then you have a decent Andoid for under £100. Mine runs Endomondo and Angry Birds well but like all Androids the battery is pretty poor.

My samsung while being android, won't take android apps apparently due to some crazy google licensing thing. Is this the case for all samsung phones?

Isn't that a Smartphone thing rather than an Android thing?

Anyone who complains about smartphone battery life is mental.
How long does your laptop last switched on?

Anyway, personally I'm enjoying a htc desire z at the moment, although I wouldn't recommend it if you aren't interested in having a proper physical keyboard, since it's necessarily a bit bulkier with the slide out keyboard.

+1. The 'ruggedness' (I've not tested mine) is a bonus for me- I was just about set on the Desire but it's a pretty chunky/heavy piece of kit in your pocket, nice though they are.

Really pleased with my Defy.

Apology accepted Three Fish! 😆

Seriously, I agree with Mr Salmon, the Defy is a great phone, particularly if you're worried about getting your phone a bit damp when on a ride. Plus I'm deadly serious about the pocket thing - a lot of smart phones are massive, and although the iphone/Galaxy S are nice bits of kit, they are like them 1980's brick phones. But less cool, obviously.
