I turn 44 in two days, and have just received a card with some money inside.

In the meantime, a few weeks ago, I put Mrs SR on notice that it was time for me to buy three new bikes: a new road; a new mountain; and a cx. This will not happen until I can save up enough for them from the bits of cash I take in from time to time (like birthdays and odd jobs).

The question is: Would you take the money you just got and use it as 'seed' money for the first bike? Or would you use it to buy some of the smaller things for the bikes (and for yourself) that you never tend to buy because they cost just a little too much for the normal budget to cover, but not enough to get excited about saving up for?

Seed money for me - likely is by the time I've saved up the bike trinket I thought of today will be out of fashion.

There's way not enough information in this post to offer an opinion.
How much did you get?
What bike(s) do you have currently?

I will never buy a whole new bike again, just a frame and transfer the bits over. Do you need (want) a whole new bike?

The money I got today was £250. So, enough for a decent 'seed', but also enough to buy a few of the smaller things I sort of need/want.

I want a new road bike because I currently ride a 2005 Trek 1200 that I bought last summer as an inexpensive way back to road riding. But I have fallen in love with the road, and would like to treat myself to something that I really, really want within a reasonable budget. Say, between 1 and 2k.

The mountain is less pressing. I currently have a 2009 Fisher Big Sur, but would also like a fatbike. Regardless, the mountain is last of the three to get replaced.

Finally, the cx would have to be new because I have never had one before, and would like to use it for a bit of everything: commuting, Belgian cobbles, and weekend dirt.

As for medium-ish things I could go for, I would include a decent winter winter jersey for road and a nice cycling jacket.

That's it by way of advice/opinions? 😯

I've spilled the beans on what I need/want. Other than 'coke and hookers' (both of which, I would expect, exceed the sums we are talking about anyway), any further thoughts?

A low-cost flight to Berlin, you'll have no trouble finding a hooker and a couple of lines of coke for the change from £250 once there. Google "Bordell Berlin" for ideas, providing links might be a step too far for the forum rules.

The poor man's trying to lose weight, coke and hookers will help, Greggs will not.

Fallen in love with the road? 😮

How much are you planning to spend on a future road bike? Depending on that, if £250 represents a significant chunk of that, I'd use it as a seed. Otherwise, you could upgrade your current bike with things that would make an appreciable difference.

Sounds like you aren't planning to race on the road (or CX), why not get a gravel type bike and two sets of wheels?
