My Black n Decker Scorpian just literally fell apart cutting up supplies for the stove. Generally I'm burning waste from builders - up to about 4 x 4 - and have some branches and logs seasoning away for next year.

I've been steered away from a chainsaw in case any of the wood has nails in that I miss before cutting. Have thought about a circular saw too, but I doubt they give enough cutting depth, so I'm back to a reciprocating saw again.

No idea what to look for, so any recommendations please?

Thanks.

I found my reciprocating saw to be slow and hard work, plus it cost me a fortune in blades. Now I have a Bosch electric chainsaw and I would not go back to the old saw.

IMO the reciprocating saw would just be a waste of money. Sorry!

I use a circular saw it takes seconds to cut through and if the wood is too wide just turn it and job done. I've changed the blade once since buying it, the new blade cost more than the machine but it's still going strong after nearly 2 years.

For proper wide logs if I can still get them I use my parents Petrol Chainsaw, rrrrrrriinnng!

im with Drac - i cut up all my waste wood with an evolution rage 255mm mitre saw. - because chainsaws and nails dont mix and just about all my waste wood had nails through.

rage cuts through metal and wood with the same blade just fine

Aldi were selling them last week (£25) - your local may still have some in.

Work great, and they also had a blade set.

My makita cordless recip saw is great, but it's probably the wrong tool for chopping lots of wood. As others have said, mitre saw with a decent blade will be a squillion times faster.

I've got a cheapo b&q ProPower mitre saw, blades are about £14 for 3 off Ebay.
As has already been said, if the wood's too thick just turn it over, will cut up to about 6" this way.

I've used a cheap table saw for cutting up off cuts of wood with nails in it, it's much safer cutting stuff like that holding it with two hands rather than one.

Blimey. Posted that up this morning wondering if I might just get a reply or two! Wondered down to b&q for a gander, ended up in screwfix, bought one of these http://m.screwfix.com/p/titan-ttb355chn-40-5cm-2000w-electric-chainsaw-230v/92771 with the thinking that I could always get another cheap scorpion or something if it all went wrong, for the price of a Bosch saw.

Thanks for all the tips. Guess I need to build a sawhorse now!

That's what I've got. I partnered it with one of these:
