Am having to shave every day just now and it's hacking my face to bits no matter how careful I am. What razor do you use and is it any good?

One of these, for me it's better than wet shaving.

I had one thought it was Ok, then I couldn't get blades locally so switched back to a Gillette job fusion thing as it was on promotion. I realised for me I should have stuck to Gillette, Ok blades are expensive but they last around a month for me.

Electric razors sill don't seem to be anything near as good as wet shave for me.

Mach 3s work well for me.

Shaving immediately after a shower so the face and hair have been wet for a while seems to help. As does using a brush to apply your soap of choice.

Go hairy! Hairy faces are nice. It's also nearly winter and cold so it would keep your face warm! 🙂

Gilette fusion or mach 3, but I haven't shaved for a while as I've got nothing to look smart for so I can't be arsed 😆 Those safety razor things are the singlespeed of shaving.

Using Merkur Futur since around 7 years..takes a couple of weeks to get the hang of it but once you do it's awsome.

Got to be paired up with Feather blades from Japan, good soap/cream and badger shaving brush

Good Luck

Spent years using Mach 3's and getting razor burn and acne, changed to a third hand Merkur Futur and some decent soap, and its like I have a new face 🙂 I found the Feather blades a little 'bitey', get on best with Astra Superior Platinum which are sharp enough not to drag, but don't cut you too often. Some are rubbish, including the Wilkinson Swords you can get in the supermarket. I'm sure they are fine in some razors, but didn't get on with them with the Merkur.

Used a King of Shaves Azor for the last few years and found it fine - I guess the key point to note is that my stubble isn't very heavy. I wanted something even easier to use, and a month and a bit ago bought a Panasonic ES-LA63 Pro electric shaver... fantastic!

I never had nicks or shaver rash with the Azor and always would have said it was as gentle on my skin as anything could be, but using the Panasonic has been a revelation! I'd been a bit concerned as apparently it can take a month or so for your skin to become used to the action of an electric shaver. If your skin is very sensitive the Panasonic can be used on wet skin (even in the shower), which apparently makes it even more gentle (and more hassle to clean)!

When I was trying to work out which shaver to buy I called up shavers.co.uk and they were very helpful on the phone.

Gillette Mach 3 or Wilkinson Sword quattro. I got fed up buying the wrong blades because I couldn't remember which razor I had I just bought the one I didn't have.
To be kind to my skin I found shaving in the shower and using Bulldog shave gel the best solution for me, king of shaves gel (blue one) is OK as well.
If you are cutting yourself try to not to worry about cutting yourself and hold your face in a way that the skin you are shaving is taught.

Merkur Futur here as well.

I've been using the Merkur blades but I've just bought a selection of blades from http://www.shaving.ie/ .

I'll see how I get on.

Tried the DE safety razors, tried the gillette 200 blade razors, but none of them come close to a nice bic.

I only shave about once a week once told to by boss or wife. Even then it's just using a babylis I stuble thingy. Take the heavy off down to .5mm. When I have to go clean I would use a bic as above or just not go to whatever requires I need to shave.

Wedding and daughters christening was last time I had a proper shave. I just hate that tight burning feeling.

Clippers. Shaving uses a whole lot of time, effort, aerosols (if you use them), plastic and other things we could do without.

You gotta take the rough with the smooth 😉

I now use a double edge safty ( Muhle R89 with 7 oclock sharp blades) razor I tried everything else and just bleed.
the most important thing I find now is the soap you use, Blue Beards Revenge and a good brush
Have a look at the shaving shack on t net

Strange.

Almost STW in minature, this thread.

I'm bad at X, therefore if I buy an expensive, or niche, or both type of Y, things will get better...

I've shaved my own face with cheapo razors all my adult life and can do it perfectly well. I also get to shave other peoples faces with cheapo NHS razors and can do that perfectly well. In days gone by I also had to shave people from nipple to knee before surgery using cheapo NHS razors and I did it perfectly well.

Anyway, as you were..

3 or 4 days without shaving then a cheap plastic bic. but I don't have an important job where being cleanfaced is somewhat and enforced. well, it is, but I don't care.

Merkur Progress and feathers for me at home. Gillette Tech and Gillette 7 o'clocks when travelling. A selection of soaps and creams depending upon how decadent I'm feeling. 🙂

Merkur for me too. I just got pissed off at the expense of the Mach3/fusion/whatever blades.

It's the best shave I've ever had, it does take practise, I use oil and soap applied with a brush.

Traditional Gillette fat handle (think it's 1940 to 42) safety razor of course and not those modern metrohomosexual razors advertised by Woody Tiger and his mates. 😆

Traditional Gillette fat handle (bought it for less than £25 but can be expensive) + £0.49 Palmolive shave stick + ebay £8 unbranded far east inhumane cruelly made badger brush + £1.00 Pyrex bowl + £5 Nivea Aftershave Balm.

There you go.

Cheapo ASDA razors for me. I always wash before hand, make sure my face gets well soaped and soaked. Makes a big difference.

Mach 3 with king of shaves oil, in the shower. No foam or other crap. the oil stopped shaving rash immediately.

Arko stick, Edwin jagger razor and bagger with a box of feathers, feathers are super sharp and always nip my neck but the shave is stunning, tried sharks , derbys , astras but found them a little too blunt , thing about db razors is once you buy the razor and brush it doesn't cost mote than 4 quid for a premium pack of ten blades so you can chop and change until you find the shave you want

Mach 3 Turbo with King of Shaves Menthol gel stuff, whilst in the shower.
A razor probably lasts me about 8 to 10 shaves. A nice coat of Nivea afterwards, no aftershave or anything else. 😀

Who fancies a crocodile dundee hard man shaving competition?

You go out and buy a knife, the butcher the better but it has to be a knife. Kitchen knife, bread knife, flick knife, bowie knife, I don't care.

And then shave with it for a couple of weeks. Then post a picture of the carnage on here.....

Genuine rubbish.

I've no great brand affinity - but which magazine rate wilky sword diamond (3 blade) as the best mans razor. I cant argue. They disliked the Gilette 5 blade ones on cost - and too broad a cutting area and too much slime left on the skin. Also I can get the wilky's on ebay for cheap and they withstand my stubble for about 3 weeks per blade. Apparently almost all ebay Gilettes are counterfeit?

STW is this like mumsnet now????

Not safety razor though and there are so many different brand of safety razor blades out there you do not need to stick to one brand.

😀

@chewkw - to be clear - my comments were about the 5 blade ones. And my knowledge of this is purely regurgating Which's review. Apart from the King of Shaves ones which I can testify before a court - are crap based on experience.

No problem.

Yes, no surprise there as they are rather expensive hence attracting many counterfeit. 🙂

Bought one of these little beauties a couple of weeks ago, Merkur 37c. I use feather blades and I've been trying an Arko shaving stick or my usual Mitchells Wool fat soap.
Fantastic shave and not scary at all 😀
