We will be in touch
Our imac 27 display is starting to fail, and we can't afford the time at present to get it fixed (Mrsflap uses it for work at home and is currently v busy). We've been quoted 3 weeks for a fix (under John Lewis warranty).
As a back-up in case it fails completely before we can get it repaired, has anyone successfully used a relatively cheap monitor (20" would do) off the thunderbolt port? Lots of confusion on the web about compatibility.
Many thanks.
Would setting it up as dual screen not work? http://m.digitaltrends.com/how-to/how-to-run-dual-monitors-on-a-imac-all-in-one/
I'd look to get an external monitor connected using the above method or ring apple and see how long for them to fix it.
Thanks, the dual monitor thing is the way I want to go but lots of horror stories on the web of compatibility issues. I don't want to spend £750 on a fancy apple screen either.
Need to use John Lewis because of warranty, or do you think Apple will honour it ? That's a good idea, we'll try it. It's over a year old though...
You can get various adaptors. I plug my laptop into my TV using an TB to HDMI adaptor. I've also got a TB to VGA for work. Check a mac forum to be sure what will work.
I used to plug my MacBook Air into a 22 external monitor using the thunderbolt port. I stopped doing it after the third logic board went pop. Apple replaced them under warranty, and said it wasn't to blame, but I'm not convinced, and it hasn't gone pop again since I stopped doing it.
Is there no DVI out on the newer iMacs? I dual screen from my 20" 2008 iMac to the same screen that popped my MBA using the dvi port and an adapter.
EU law forces Apple to honour a 2 year warranty FoC, even though they don't tell you that - they're being fined for this.

EDIT: Although if you bought from John Lewis, poss you have to go through them....
thanks all. no DVI port on new imacs :(. I'm going for a Dell screen and hope that the minidisplayport / thunderbolt i/f works as it should.
minidisplayport to DVI (or HDMI) has worked fine with my thunderbolt mac and any display I've tried.
Why wouldn't it?
(cheap non-apple mini-DP to VGA adapters don't work very well however, or at all with certain monitors. Cheap digital cables are fine though).
Have you looked at the hazro hz27wc or the DGM IPS-2701WPH 27...check out the overclockers website.
I have been looking at both these options for a PC rig but may work for you too.
