I spent about £100-120 on an Evolution branded one from Screwfix. Does the job but takes a bit of faffing to get some angles set right. Did a full house refurb with it. Also, it has a laser so it's cool.

I have a basic sliding compound mitre saw (Woodstar something or other, £100 ish). Fine for cutting stuff up, but not that precise.

Elu sliding mitre bought off ebay (like this one only 240v http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Elu-Mitre-Saw-/321442636480?pt=UK_Home_Garden_PowerTools_SM&hash=item4ad77962c0).

Lovely. Motor / bearings wonderfully smooth, action precise & accurate. Amazing quality. Friend (who's a joiner) swears by his Makita and it's definitely good. But even second hand they go for £250+. Mine cost £100 and reckon it's just as good quality.

got an evolution single bevel 225 sliding mitre here too - big tip - ignore the markings on the tool.

use an engineers square to set the blade at 90degrees to the base and use a sliding bevel or a trend angle fix to set the angle.

also got an elu flip double bevel and its just on a different level of quality - much stiffer but not able to cut the same depth as the evolution. i still do the same thing regarding setting the angle though - but it cost about 700 quid in 1992 as oppose the evolutions 169 quid 2 years ago.

Flips over and becomes a table saw on the otherside .... i usually use that side and use my evolution for the angles and choping short bits.

Actually the one I got was £100 but they have knocked it down to £50.

Edit: I'm telling big fat porkies, I got the sliding version which is still £100

You will struggle to do much better for DIY than an Evolution one from the evo outlet on ebay, the saws are all returns for one reason or another that have been reboxed and sold off cheap mine was about £55 and would have included free delivery had I not collected it as I needed it that weekend. I quizzed the bloke who served me at the warehouse about why they had so many returns and he reckoned it was to do with no quibble returns policies at places like screwfix.

Mine even had a brand new blade.

Seemingly they currently only have b graded ones which is a bit more expensive than my c graded one was.
