I have need to for something that acts as a table, but, also acts as a lid for that which supports it beneath.
As such it has to be totally weatherproof and resistant to it have BBQ and pizza ovens on it.
It would be nice to look nice but it can look rustic/farmy or otherwise it will be supported by galvanised steel.
What would be an interesting choice? I kinda fancy concrete canvas.
Not quite sure what the first paragraph means exactly in terms of acting as a lid, but a granite worktop meets all of the other criteria.

Obviously it’s too heavy to lift up and down if that’s what you meant, unless you were to add gas struts…at which point this starts to sound like a good project
If you are near southampton I have some large glass panels from a balustrade that are designed to take the impact of a 100kg adult banging into them without issue. About 1m x 1.3m from memory but let me know if you are interested. You will need to collect as they are bloody heavy.
Re lid. I haven't really decided yet if it needs to lift. That will depend on material. Priority is it doesn't let water in. I like the engineering considerations of a sliding top though.... Worktop is a great idea I had thought of.
WCA Southampton to Peebles is a bit of a schlep but thanks also glass is an interesting idea aswell especially as the base has had a former life.
What about those recycled plastic sheets you can get?
Light enough for a lid and weatherproof I imagine.
That's interesting kayak yes wasn't aware of them. Might need a little heat shield cover for use but very strong potential.
Structural 18mm cement board would tick those boxes.
In my experience, a pizza oven will warp anything plastic pretty quickly so you'll definitely need a heat shield. I just use a cut off of MDF.

Yes, with a plastic top I'd likely have it removable exposing an Adobe fire basin underneath over which the pizza oven would go.
Nor concrete with a mosaic top. The wife bought one on eBay and it the heaviest thing in the galaxy.
@kayak23 have you got a link for the sheet you pictured? All the options I found were a dull grey or less interesting than that one.
Not sure what those plastic sheets are like, but the recycled plastic benches are prone to sagging in the heat.
Surely stainless steel is the heatproof outdoor work surface that can still be lifted?
