We will be in touch
Doing a fair bit of commuting so looking at an ipad or similar (preferably non-ipad as prob cheaper) that'll allow me to
- watch films
- download and read daily newspaper
- download books
- happy to wifi at home to download, don't think 3G is necessary
- not interested in gaming (altho my son will tell me otherwise!)
- not bothered by lots of gizmos ... basic needs only!
Any recos of what to look at?
Thanks

Also if you have a half decent smart phone then you can use it as a mobile access point and connect the tablet to it via wifi.
Or the Andy pad.?
iPad I reckon .. the most popular, the most apps, pickup a Refurb for a bit more of a bargain but still with warranty.
lack of flash is becoming less and less of an 'issue' (if you could call it that in the first place) with HTML5 becoming more prevalant i.e. I can now watch vimeo and there are iPad apps for most mainstream TV catchup i.e. ITV, 4OD, iPlayer, SKY (if you're a subscriber)
EDIT for Movie viewing I use Allinone browser, does the job for DivX type files
If it's for needs as simple as you say they are, the older iPad 1 will do the job and save you a few ££ but still run iOs5.
I got my 64Gig 2nd hand off my Brother-in-law.. well pleased.
Kue up da Mac h8R's baby
You should save yourself the hastle of looking after an expensive gadget on your commute and buy a newspaper, preferably the guardian. That should keep me in a job for a couple more years 😉
Meh, sod it, you can't slow progress, but you can't blame me for trying. I've just taken advantage of an employee half price iPad offer, so we can understand the new "digital first" concept the papers adopted, and to be fair, the guardian app is pretty slick, and award winning. It is the future. Time for me to start looking for a new job lol.
Anyone have any thoughts on ipad 1 vs 2? Been seriously tempted to get one of these but wondering if it's worth the cash for 2. Not bothered about more video cameras.
IPad2 worth the extra over the original I think. Slimmer, faster and does more stuff like full mirroring to an appleTV.
HP are releasing more 32gb Touchpads for £130, via coupons issued to registered developers- might be worth trying to sign up.
I've no idea what the competition is like but I bought an iPad 2 for browsing and videos and it's superb.
It would be perfect for a train commutes. The only problem I have with it is the minute I pick it up to do something on it my 3 kids all want it.
Thanks sharkbait, been thinking the same.
Muggomagic, how much memory did you go for?
32gb. I've got loads of video podcasts, 3 HD films, 8 tv programmes loads of apps, books, music and photos and still have around 9gb of space.
You don't really need big storage for lots of films. If you use the (brilliant) camera connector kit you can import a film directly from a sd card onto the iPad and play it from within the photo app. Wat h then delete.
This way you can do without iTunes and carry as many films as you want on a big sd card or two.
Sounds like you need a Kindle to me.
thanks all ... the ipad is neat but I'll only use a fraction of it ie. no interest in apps so an expensive option.
Kindle ... does it play movies? Or is this the new Kindle fire?
plenty of hp touchpads on ebay

God dammit! Just pulled the trigger on a refurb ipad2 32GB. I am justifying it as being for my photography business - showing clients images/portfolio etc. 😀

That's what you think now.... but once you get one they become almost indispensible!
Grum, the iPad is great for photo's. Make sure you get the camera connector to make importing images quick and easy. You could also link it to a big TV with an AppleTV to display pics.
Thanks sharkbait, will do. What about smart covers, worth getting?
HP are releasing more 32gb Touchpads for £130
I have a (£89) Touchpad and have used iPads and iPad2s.
I would buy the iPad every time - it just feels that bit more, well, more.
If I had paid the original price for the HP I would be *VERY* disappointed. At £89 it is useful for surfing in front of the telly and for the kids/nephews etc to play Angry Birds on it and doesn't feel too valuable as to not let it out of my sight.
iPad2 WiFi, 32GB if you have much content. 16GB if money's tight. 64GB if money's no object. No point buying a 3G iPad if you have a smartphone and can create a 'personal hotspot' - you get to suffer dreadful 3G performance but of less cash.
You can buy a LOT of books for the price of an iPad you know. And books are biodegradable.
iPad2 is definitely worth getting over iPad1. Refurb iPad 2s pop up in the refurb store on the apple website. USA prices are still cheaper than the UK if you know anyone who could bring you one.
Smart Covers are hilarious. Aside from falling off they tend to move in your bag and you can find your iPad lighting it up nicely. Get a slipcase cover. Simple, understated neoprene ones can be had for £3 on Amazon.
