if you can push your budget to £1.25 million you can buy David Baileys old house.

http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-34152907.html

Included in the sale is the Lordship of Sampford Spiney and 202 acres of common land.

You'd probably get a country estate, complete with a title, and staff of serfs in bonded slavery

When living in town, there was a new tower being built over the moat that had studio flats going for just under a million.

South of the River, FFS!

@zippykona, it looks like everyone else thinks that listing is a joke too - been listed since November; maybe people are waiting for them to drop it to a sensible price

Following on from the other depressing house threads , I'm pretty shocked how little you get.

Looks a bit manky from the outside, but it's a 6 bed detatched house which looks to be nicely finished, in prime commuterville, doesn't seem too bad.

This is near me, not bad at all.

Strangely enough I was watching the Good Life (filmed in the mid to late 70's) just before I came on here and Tom had just been to see the bank manager with a proposal that the bank would give him £2000 per annum once he retired and the bank could keep the house once the Goods died.

Bank manager pointed out that the bank would be putting out £80,000 against their detached house, in Surbiton like the one above, with a value of perhaps £27,000 that may increase over the 20-30 years to £40,000.

I think property values may have risen a little more than expected since then.

Also, in the series Jerry Ledbetter has a house of similar value (£27,000) but a salary package of '£18,000, an expense account and a car' stated in one episode. Now I know it's not real but I assume the figures stated were somewhere near reality at the time, again showing the growing disparity between house prices and pay.

Nothing quite stretches to a million in my area - the really, really nice houses are half that, the stuff that nudges close to £1m are really working land with a house - however if you can stretch to 1.1million then a '53 bedroom property' is available, but it is if fact a portfolio of 22 tenanted homes being sold as one lot.

I think this thread has finally brought home to me the reality of the North-South divide.

The economic factors that control house prices are just so marked.

The Strutt Parker site often has some absolute gems on. Did you see the other hall that was on there last summer, not far from the Chillingham Estate?? Think it was about £15M.

That would probably be Duncan Davisdson's place; LilBurn Estate's; he's some relation to the Queen and started selling off land and houses including the main hall.

Ah this one.

none in that price range in my area so i had to go further afield (5miles)...

not a big fan of these stately mansion type ones...a bit too pompous and ostentatious for my liking...also not a big fan of dated floral carpets and sofas.

for just under 1m this is nice
http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-36038131.html
for 1.25m this isnt bad
http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-27959256.html?premiumA=true
this one is ok as well
http://www.rightmove.co.uk/property-for-sale/property-13748343.html

this is under budget leaving enough to be able to get at least 2 range rovers...but i like it for the exposed brickwork inside...no need for wallpapering or painting!!

I'm sure the tower was for sale too but I may be wrong. He did sell of a lot or property though.

Can't remember what the link is to the Royal, I thought it was distant cousin but may be wrong. But yes friendly with Charles one of his daughters was the Bridesmaid for his wedding to Dianna.

Northwood again:

Conincidentally, the Good Life post above immediately follows a Northwood house - and Northwood is where the Good Life was actually filmed (not Surbiton)!

Following on from the Cambridge thread, I am actually pleasantly surprised; you can get a 3-bed detached property near the centre for £850k. Although a few miles out you can get a nice 6 bed with triple garage and swimming pool, or an equestrian centre!

If you count yourself amongst not only the haves but the have-yachts, I guess you could find enough change down the back of the couch to buy this crummily-decorated beach shack and spend a few bob doing it up.

It's odd looking at North/South (forgeting London for a moement, that's different) houses arround £100k and £1million.

I reckon comparable houses in Reading and Middlesbrough are about 3-4x difference in price. But once you get over £300k the difference shrinks raplidly. £1million in the Chilterns is proabbly only 25% cheaper on the Yorkshire Moors.

Seems like wherever you are there's a consistent ammount of consistently rich people. It's the average to poor demographic that fluctuates.
