Having a 'nostalgia jukebox' moment and thought why is this no longer mainstream, yet pappy dance music is still popular as ever.

Is it all down to the changing composition of the drugs?

Folks realised it was crap.

They will with that drivel which they currently call "R & B". That used to mean something else entirely when I was younger.

I guess, like any music made by artists who actually make music because they want to, rather than for commercial gain, it continues in the underground scene. Meanwhile all the shite that is pushed by the record companies and lapped up by the kiddies rules the mainstream.
Occasionally, something decent rears its head (eg. dubstep), it'll sink back down after a little while. But it will still exist in some form or other.

Ambient is pretty much dead but there's plenty of good acid stuff still on the go

A young fella called Brian Eno recently released an album on Warp. Ambient will never die!
