I've heard people on TV suggest that we have a number of different types of fish off our shores that we should be eating instead fish like cod to help let the stocks recover. Can't remember what they are though! One had green bones I think?!
Pollocks.
Pollock?
Sticklebacks.
Pollocks.
He was only asking.
Pollock or Colin as they are known in Sainsbury's ๐
Wow, that sure is a load of pollocks ๐
Supposedly tilapia is a very efficient form of protein.
Mackerel. Although not a direct substitute for cod.
IWH - otherwise known as shark
EDIT: Although the IWH seems to be a bit scarce now
See here: http://www.msc.org/
I had cod last night ๐ฎ
Farmed ones....
Farmed ones....
Ah but the farmers kill off the seals.
Pollock, lovely fish.
Coley as well.. although not as close in texture/flavour to cod as pollock is...
Pollock 2nded. Also I think coley are ok, and work better as a cod substitute (smoked coley works great in fish pie etc.). Gurnard if you can look 'em in the face. In terms of overall sustainability, farmed can be dodgy as they feed caught fish to them, v. energy intensive and bit of a waste of resources. MSC is useful, but e.g. they certify NZ hoki, which is a long way to bring a fish given we live by the sea. Check out the MCS for the good fish guide ( http://www.fishonline.org/). Nice choice of acronyms for 2 vaguely similar outfits!
Had some tilapia the other day, made a fish pie with it, and it was pretty good. Cheap too.
Pollock, lovely fish.
3rded, I prefer the taste of it to cod.
Coley's nice. My cat likes it and so do I.
Are Koi carp edible? I only ask as there's this pond in the park and...
Yep Koi were originally bred for food.
Agreed farmed fish may not be that eco friendly.
I've always preferred pollock to cod anyway - the main thing is to eat stuff that is in season; mackerel in summer etc...
I had basa fillets the other day which I liked - white and no bones.
Gurnard (spelling) is a favourite of the Padstein man.
