or do you just go with water and squash?
or even energy gels?
Either H2O or that stuff from Morrisons (3 for a £) Tried all kinds over the years & nowt seems to make much difference, but the Morrisons stuff tasted ok.
Torq Natural - the unflavoured one.
I've tried loads and most give me bad guts,recently tried High 5 Zero tablet things and my guts are fine,not sure if they do anything mind......
dilute apple juice with a pinch of salt
orange lucozade / water
50 / 50 mix
dash of lemon or lime juice
I use orange lucozade sport and water at a mix of 1:3
Everything else has given me a poorly belly
PSP22
Guinness
Water and water.
www.myprotein.co.uk tri-carb has been working well for me over the last few months. I have been using the unflavoured stuff and ixing it with my favourite cordial 🙂
SIS GO.
Palatable and stops me getting dehydrated/cramps.
A jug of good, strong black coffee before I go and water for the trip.
expert dose of pulse to go mental and then top up with psp if riding hard at events for more than a couple of hours
Squash normally
Psp22 on long rides and races
Orange juice, glucose, water and salt when hungover
Gatorade ticks all the boxes but on super long rides I need salty snacks too.
Beetroot juice!
None usually but sometimes I use the lucozade powder in a camelbak- it works out pretty cheap and it tastes pretty nice.
Elfinsafety - MemberGives you loads of energy!
Have you ever seen me fighting, I mean, really fighting??
Eeek!
You scare me! 😉
Everybody was kung-fu fighting....
Racist. 😐
Grrr! 😆
Sweeeet!
this usually peps me RIGHT up!
I remember some mates at uni, at a house party. they were doing a bit of Charlie off a CD case. I've picked up the case to have a look at the tracks on it, without realising there's loads of powder on it. All over the floor. 😆
Well, I thought it was funny, anyway.
I urinated on a friend's leg once too, but that mightuv bin at a different party actually.
I use Torq natural or cheapo plain maltodextrin if available, for general use. It's actually a lot cheaper than fruit juice.
Although lately I am thinking I'll mix in Torq flavoured, because I like my stuff orangey or lemony and most other methods of flavouring come with aspartame and so on.
I've used sis, lucozade powder and high5. OF those High5 is my favourite. I find the sis ones too sweet and the lucozade orange didn't taste at all orangey.

For a 500ml Bottle (Recycled Plastic Coke/Water/Pepsi etc Bottle)
* Water – 500ml.
* Glucose – 3tsp.
* Lemon Juice – 1tbsp
* Salt – pinch
Notes:
* a: 1 tbsp is equal to one medium sized lemon.
* b: Always add glucose to liquid.
Glucose is generally harder on your stomach than maltodextrin though, and it is absorbed differently for some reason or other. That's why they make energy drink out of it and not glucose.
I make my own using, Maltodextrin and Fructose or dextrose. I add elete water for electrolytes.
Works as well as anything else I've tried and costs an awful lot less.
Edit:

Doesn't Maltodextrin have to be metobolised in to Glucose so your muscles can use it? Slowing down the absorbtion rate giving you longer release. Straight Glucose would be absorbed instantly in to the blood stream giving you a massive spike? Genuine question.
Torq unflavoured for me, one of the only ones that doesn't make me feel sick

Dunno works for me 🙂
Maltodextrn is a mix of saccharides from 3 - 20 glucose units long. So yo u don't actually know what you are getting. it can be almost as quick acting as glucose or slower acting.
Lee, I just use the malto on its own when not racing - even cheaper still 🙂
I dunno about the metabolism but I do know that malto has a pretty high GI anyway. Which is good for biking.
Oh, found this which is interesting:

Also talks about hyponatremia.

Well fast absorbtion is bad when you are at rest, for that very reason. However it's a different ball game when exercising. You start to use your glycogen stores early on (how early depends on how hard you are riding of course) so when you are exercising your 'tank' will always be partly empty. So as you sip small amounts of energy drink you'll be continually topping up your blood sugar. This will create a trickle of insulin which will get the blood sugar into your muscles where it's needed and can be used straight away. All AFAIK of course.
Cheers, I (roughly) based my mix on what's in Torq et al. It works for me apart from the fact I'm using Dextrose at the moment rather than Fructose, it's so bloody sweet it makes me feel like my teeth are going to rot out.
I add a scoop of whey after I've ridden and it becomes a pretty good post ride recovery drink too.
This is also interesting http://www.pponline.co.uk/encyc/0014.htm
It says that more than one kind of carb will help regardless of what they are.
Fructose is also available in Boots btw if you want to try that.
Vitargo- quite cheap, full of calories
I never thought of trying Boots, I usually get it from myprotein, but when I needed it they didn't have it in stock. So I tried Dextrose, much to my dentist's glee.
I think they sell fructose for diabetics.
I like the berry flavoured Powerbar drink mix. Tried it at Whinlatter Enduro last year and two cups got me round that bugger of a climb at the end of the lap.
Rockstar FTW 😉
