at £40 a tonne?

Who do you think will pay for that? Higher rate tax payers I suppose.

I reckon we need corporate sponsorship. Maybe Hula Hoops or Polo.

How about the landfill stuff then ? We're running out of space for that. No corporate advertising billboards on Earth's Rings though please.

What a 'Porn Ring' round Earth Flash ? .......... no I guess not 😐

Although I would be interested in knowing where Stoner gets his porn at £40 a tonne ?

That's fab.

Two questions:

- what is the "Roche limit" that determines the size of the rings in his model?

- would the rings would cast a shadow over part of the planet's surface during the day, and would that shadow be fixed over a particular latitude or would it move? (Obviously a fixed shadow would be pretty inconvenient for the people under it, but I can't work out whether that would happen)

Can't see the video, (no Flash), but if we carry on chucking stuff up into LEO and Clark orbits, we're going to end up with junk rings anyway.

40 quid a tonne for hardcore?

your being ripped off!

30 quid a tonne for MOT type 1, and "generic hardcore/scalpings" should be considerably cheaper

as for the rings, its a yes vote from me 🙂

Couldn't we just blow up the moon and use the bits. Moons are dead common really a ring would be a big improvement. I've also got quite a bit of hardcore on the drive at the moment that I'd be willing to contribute.

Dreadful music.

TBH I would be a bit worried about the effects of the rings on the world's tidal systems.
I don't think 'blowing up the moon' would help much in that respect 😐

A very sensible point.

Could we have an informed opinion on the shadow issue as well?

It's all very well this, but I can see things getting carried away - they'll be a Facebook group, an e-petition and before you know it it'll be in someone's manifesto.

if we put all the hardcore on the internet end to end (fnarr) in a line i'm sure it would go round the world plenty of times

Rings would have zero effect on tides as they are evenlly distributed around the earth, the net gravitational pull is zero.

There would be a constant shadow that would move with the seasons, so near the equator you might be in shadow for long periods of the year 🙁

From recent experience I'd say it'd be quicker to install the rings.

Jupiter and Neptune also have faint rings, IIRC, so I'm up for a nice set of rings where we can get to see them properly. Count me in.

It would be like living on Halo 1.

Well yes blowing up the moon might stop the tides but just imagine watching it go bang. And given enough time it might put itself back together again, after all it started as as a pile of hardcore orbiting the earth.

Installation would be relatively simple. All we need to do is get as many people as possible throwing rocks, stones, gravel etc up into the sky. Throw it hard enough and it should work.

One problem though...what about all the satellites orbiting the Earth?

Why go for boring standard rings when with a bit of imagination you can get some that are a little different.

If the proposed rings are constructed from old bits of glass this will reduce the shadow problem whilst more importantly introduce a funky glittering rainbow effect.
