reading the rave biking thread.would like to get into drum n bass (i like what i have heard).not that knowledgeable on the subject though.what bangin choons would you recommend to get started with.cheers 🙂
Check out the hospital records and drum n bass arena podcasts, those are both good places to start and to get a feel for what you like. If you want to go darker than those have a look at barcode recordings podcast, it's rather ace but very dark/glitchy
I prefer it from my time - 93-2001 ish for me, new stuff is good, but I prefer what I know
Really love my Raga Jungle.
Danny Byrd on The Essential Mix - can be downloaded if you look for it, is excellent.
Ltj bukem.
And if you really are in and angry mood then panacea.
panacea
I had his first album, dirty noises, not as good to listen to these days though.
THe drummer from Napalm Death made a decent album as well.
Bukum is ok to listen to but rubbish to go see at a club.
Some from my vinyl collection
hospital records - I'll second that, great podcast action too.
I'll 2nd the raga jungle!
You tube shy fx & t-power. Some really good tunes there.

T Power - self evident truth of an intuitive mind, amazing album can't believe it's 16 years old 😯
for chillin 😆
This is a pretty excellent mix if you can get your hands on it

If you can get your hands on the Nightlife mixes by Andy C then those are also excellent, very dancefloor tunes.
Anyone who has been into d&b for a few years should also check out this badboy - past 2 present, 75 tracks in 5 minutes...some bring back some memories!:
Madly getting back into LTJ Bukems' Progression Sessions from 2000-2004..
Bukem, Conrad & DRS doing their thing..
It's great company on the iPod while thrashing around Delamere
There's an ace NiT GriT re-mix of DJ shadow's building steam... on the Remix Project.
The sound quality is crap on that vid but the whole thing is on free download here: http://djshadow.com/news/free-download-dj-shadow-remix-project.
LOVE drum and bass.
podcasts to look out for are Hospital records/ solid steel/ Phuture frequency
DNBShare is a good place to get some mixes
Metalheadz on soundcloud do podcasts
Hospital Records promote amazing d&b artists.
My favourites are London Electricity, Danny Byrd and High Society.
Back into time...
I also loved what was sometimes called, erm, 'atmospheric drum n' bass'. First heard this played by John Peel - lovely use of the Star Wars sample:
And an old LTJ favourite:
sound like a drum kit falling down a stairs
I raise you
His tunes are a SOAB to mix!
im selling 330 classic Hardcore & D/B records from 91-94 in mint state mail for list bikeboi2013@yahoo.co.uk
Theres none better than these- 1993-1996 ish.
Such a tune!
Theres none better than these- 1993-1996 ish.
True dat.
I do miss it all.
I've been out a few times in the last couple of years and really enjoyed it but felt old. Shy FX was fantastic, played loads of tunes from my dnb years. Even got off my nutt a couple of times, including work nights out, when nobody knew.
I listened to Brown Paper Bag today - forgot how good it is.

Had a look on youtube
Lots of Technical Itch, No-Uturn
OF course nobody has so far posted
Never gets old
Sub Focus, Ed Rush and Optical, Roni Size (he's old school but still amazing.
Dj hype, Andy C...
List could go on......... 😀 😀
Shy FX and Apache- Original Nutta. Yes- thanks for posting that one, id forgotten how good it was! I used to piss my neighbours off with that one one full chat!!
Happy days...
The original Metalheadz label album is still a good listen....most of it was too mellow to be played at the parties i went to from 94-98 when i really liked D&B....the obvious exception being 'Pulp Fiction' by Alex Reece....best B&B track ever.
Club tracks from that era that just had to be danced to....Bad Ass by Aphrodite & MIckey Finn.....Super Sharp Shooter....Helicopter Tune....Origin Unknown - Valley of Shadows.....The Lighter....Shy FX - Wolf....
....so many good tracks, i still happily stick on a D&B mix in the car much to the annoyance of my girlfriend!
I feel that this topic requires more Noisia
Along a similar line a bit of Spor
And just because I love it
have been trying to find a link to this track (force of hate).but cannot find one (could find this though) http://www.discogs.com/Prophecy5--Force-Of-Hate-Psychosis-Skull-Crusher/release/832220 this track was on a terrorized cd that came with metal hammer.is a great track 😀
one of the earliest instances maybe..?
Not even close....try 1969!
The D&B break that 99% of tracks are based around comes from a 6 second drum section of a track called Amen Brother in 1969....hence the description of 'Amen breaks' when somebody (usually a producer or DJ) is trying to describe a track.
Listen from 55 secs in.
lol.. fair enough
I'm an Amen geek too.. 😀
that Amen Break documentary on the radio was a bit depressing though, the guy that played drums on that track never recieved a penny in royalties although the break has been sampled possibly thousands of times for D+B, hip-hop etc
he died homeless and destitute 🙁
that only explains the beat though.. which incidentally was noticed when analysed to conform to the golden ratio also known as the divine proportion..
funky shizzle
Yeah, you'd think a lawyer somewhere would've been all over that....i find it a little bit mad that a whole music genre built up around a sampled 5 second drum loop from 1969.
It's probably linked to that golden ratio.. you can be sure they didn't know what they had stumbled across when he innocently played that break that day in the studio..
although since then the only surviving member of the band bangs on about giving the beat back to his tribal ancestors
Good to see some love for LTJ Bukem on here. Still love the Progression Sessions series, some classic tunes on those. One of my favourite memories of DnB is seeing Fabio and LTJ at Swerve at The End on a Wednesday night. We drove from Northampton down to London for it and got right on it. Happy times 8)
drum and bass before its time
