Alpkit have sold out and the 30% off the north face is very tempting - anything else to look at before I hit buy?

(For dog walking and general camping duties FWIW)

A heavily discounted Karrimor one (£49) from any high street branch of Sportsdirect or from their website?

Used to be. 3 jackets sent back to them in the last 2 yrs due to falling apart. Not been the same since Equip took over the brand. Hope POD doesn't go the same way.

If you want cheap the Uniqlo ones are amazingly good. I bought one of the Ultralight ones and it's terrific, surprisingly warm for such a thin lightweight jacket. Stick it on under another lightweight windproof and you're laughing, something like one of the Montaigne pullover ones. I might well get another one in a different colour, for £40 they're unbeatable.

They were doing them for £39.95, that's what I paid for mine, but it was an offer for a limited period of time and may have ended now, although they do keep putting up new offers on a regular basis, so it's worth going back and keeping a check, maybe signing up for an email newsletter, their prices are very good, I had an email a day or so ago advertising check flannel shirts for £14.95, which I thought was excellent, and their down parka's were reduced by around £20 the other day as well.

Arc'Teryx is the best quality kit I've ever had by some margin and that includes rab, patagonia and TNF

Quite possibly, but I think the desire was for cheap, and by no stretch of the imagination could Arc'Teryx be called cheap.
Going back to the Uniqlo stuff, TBH, even at full price, it's still amazing value for money, the parkas with hood for £60 is a real bargain, and my Ultralight is superb even at full price it's still nearly half what a RAB would cost. I'm delighted with mine, I'm wearing it all the time as a mid/top layer depending on how cold it is, with just a Tee or very thin fleece or merino underneath.

TNF redpoint optimus jacket. I live in mine between november and april (and camping trips in the summer.

ace jackets, and not actually down, but primaloft, so dries quicker and is machine washable.

I thought the quality of Rab stuff was meant to have nosedived in recent years.

My wife has one of the Beghaus ones, bought fairly cheap at an outlet place, and rates it highly.

I have one of the Alpkits which is not quite as well made but packs down much smaller and is very, very warm.

+1 for the berghaus. Got mine at go outdoors when on offer. Tried an alpkit but sleeves were too short. Thicker shoulder material. Wouldn't want to spend a lot as they all seem quite fragile.

Although my rab summit is toasty warm and I love it, it leaks down from the seams pretty much constantly, it's a jacket from about 2 years ago. The boyfriend's Rab Summit which is a bit older doesn't leak at all, so I'd second/third the calls on the quality.

Just got a Rab (Neutrino) today after trying jackets on in Leeds, Manchester and in the end Hathersage, I set off looking for a Mountain Equipment jacket but the fit was not good on me so the Rab got it in the end.

I also have a Rab Xenon and im very impressed with that for walking in the Peaks over the last few weeks , not too sure about the Pertex Quantum as it feels very thin but only time will tell on that.

I wanted a Rab jacket until I found out the Flushfart wears one. What are the alternatives? I have a ****offOutdoors a minute's walk from ma crib. They will have Rab, TNF, Montane, Paramor etc etc there. I predict early morning Dog Walks this winter (woooo...exciting new dog content). A quilted number will complete the middle class look 🙂

just picked up a Mountain Equipment Lightline - cracking jacket for the money (£128 with discount) I really like the Rab Neutrino but it didn't seem worth the extra £60 or so

(sighs)

Goose down is great, unbeatable for it's combination of warmth/weight/compressibility.

but unless you're carrying it up a cold dry mountain, a 'synthetic' jacket will suit you better, last longer, and be cheaper.

10mins sitting next to a lovely camp fire can leave a down jacket looking like a sieve.

Down isn't warm when it's wet.

geese don't volunteer for the job - it's not unlike wearing fur (this doesn't really bother me, but surprising how many people are shocked when i point this out)

a lot of the best down jackets aren't water-proof, there's no need for them to be; it doesn't rain at the top of mountains.

blah

blah

blah

at least consider a synthetic, or not, sup to you.

I find that anything more than a gilet in down is just too warm for anything other than standing around in so have gone synthetic.
These are nice http://www.arcteryx.com/Product.aspx?EN/Mens/Jackets/Atom-SV-Hoody#Insulated_Shell
Rutland outdoors have the red ones for £175.
