We will be in touch
I know this has been asked on more than one occasion, however, with the thread below about 'who's doing well', it seems some of us are feeling the squeeze, but ticking along and others are doing well.
And in the interest of being able to see which industries are doing ok, and those which aren't, I thought it'd be interesting!
Me? running my business (home automation/home cinema/lighting/security) in conjuction with IT contracting, but now i've got rid of my debts/pretty much all of my responsibilities, i'll be making the move to full-time self employment when BT kick me out of the door in a few months (got to earn as much as i can!)
jt 😉
Acquisition for one of the Mobile phone Companies..
Plant Supervisor for a company that owns rents out and washes plastic trays and pallets for the food industry. Because of the credit crunch firms are consolidating factories and outsourcing their washing so we are doing ok just had to put on another shift to cope with demand.
Everybody needs to eat. So go and have some chicken for tea because the chances are you will be helping me buy my next bike. 😀
me, I work as an examiner of the patent section of (the pretentious sounding ) World Intellectual Property Org. so keep those inventions coming.
GIS/GPS stuff. For now anyway.
Sell eco-building materials and do some sustainable building consultancy, and run the companies web sites.
National Standard Cycle Trainer - BikeAbility-like training for children and adults.
Senior Software Engineer in a national cultural institution.
IT Security. Touch wood it all seems to be fairly busy at the moment but to be frank, I don't find it very engaging any more and would find redundancy quite acceptable as a kick to push me into a different career.
Which would probably be along the lines of guest house/cafe in the Lakes interspersed with contracting to keep enough money coming in.
Nothing, if no ones looking.
Project Engineer for a manufacturer of pneumatic valves, fittings, cylinders etc. Our catalogue products, especially fittings to the HGV industry, have been very badly hit. Been here 14yrs & I've never seen it this bad. Became apparent yesterday when walking through one the machine shops. Those particular machines normally work 24-7, but were eerily quiet yesterday. Probably the first time in 14yrs I've seen them stood idle, & there is serious talk of going to a 4-day week.
Luckily we changed tack somewhat a few years ago & began to focus heavily on customer specific solutions that utilise our catalogue products where possible. This side of the business is doing very well, especially the semi-conductor (gas abatement) & medical sectors that I work in.
Pre-Sales Consultant for an IT Solutions company.. Fairly busy at the moment, which is promising.
I Manage the telephone systems for a FTSE100 company. We might find out this week if we are going to be outsourced :o(
Deputy nurse manager of a child and adolescent mental health inpatient unit. Not sure how many teenagers are going to be gravely troubled by the credit crunch but generally never any shortage of business here...
I'm a manager in a large financial institution 🙂
Strategic Hydraulic Modelling Engineer...
And i'm piss bored with it, happily go work on the folks farm if there was any money in it any more.
I work as a patent and trade mark representative and we seem to be keeping grynch busy enough 😉
Retail manager, Bracknell Cycles in Berkshire - 10 mins from Swinley forest, which is the in place to be! Business is ok....just not hitting the projected growth. Always on hand to help with good deals for STW members though!

On the plus side I (can) teach employability skills -- might be a growth industry there!!!
Paintball and airsoft site manager. Actually pretty booked up for Jan through April, so far our business seems to be surviving well.
archaic, interesting.. I never thought I'd run into someone familiar with the PCT *here*
Journalist. Now running my own company specialising in celebrity and reality TV content for online media.
Business is good, there's a trend toward outsourcing in the industry - but it's a very fast-changing business.
National QA Manager for a mahoosive UK wide constuction and building maintenance company. Only been here a month after leaving Millbrook Proving Ground (part of GM) and enjoying it.
Beats working for a living that's for sure ;o)
Office manager for a private hire taxi and limousine company. Christmas was busy but looking at the spreadsheets for last year work was 10% down on Xmas 07.
Last weekend was dead I called into the control room saturday night around 8pm, the phones were hardly ringing and we had drivers waiting 20 minutes for a job which is unheard of at that time of the night.
University lecturer / historian--bringing modern British history to assorted 18-22 year olds. With varying degrees of success, as it were...
Winemaker
Independent Mortgage Advisor,,,,,,, don't even go there 🙄
I am an analyst for a massive Gas and Power company, that no one in the uk has really heard of,
as an asside have you noticed how many people are analysts these days.
there are loads in this office (but only 4 in the analyst team)
Mature student, check it!! Msc Commercial building surveying , future job prospects poor!
Is Glupton back??
glupton is a tosser.
I run a Gunshop, business is good, you can never have too many Guns!
Environmental Sustainability MSc mature student. Job prospects should be good if companies start realising how to really save money (and the planet).
Budgie, d'you do proper sporting guns, old chap? If so, always good to know in case you can do me a good deal in cartidges....!
Systems Analyst for a major Business Process Outsourcing company. Living the dream...
Geography BSc student. Skipping the jobs front and going straight into a scholarshipped MSc in Hydrology....in Canada come July. I was working as a part-time lab researcher (circa 15-30 hours a week) during term time, until the university collectively fired 11 of us. They've seen their 'endowment stash' considerably affected given 80% of it was in 'share assets', they're now seemingly trying to kerb costs everywhere around the university.
Underwriting Specialist for an American private healthcare company. I underwrite group healthcare plans for expats. Most of my work is in the Middle East and China at the moment.
Mrgibbons - Curb costs.
Sorry, I'm not usually the pedantic type in my spare time - I just couldn't resist because you're an academic.
Media planner in an agency in Madrid. I think we're the only agency in the country that hasn't laid people off (though we only got a hamper for Christmas and didn't get the usual leg of jamon serrano which people were VERY upset about!).
The recession in Spain seems to be lagging behind the UK a bit, so wouldn't surprise me if there were redundancies this year.
grynch no matter where you are there will always be someone in the same area. I hope you are being kept busy. Now how do I get those applications to your desk 8-D
head and neck surgeon, busy as ever ( also seems to be plenty of money in the NHS)
Veterinary surgeon. Farming's doing ok at the mo (weak pound helps) and I guess people will always want to get their pets healthy but there's certainly less money around. Expecting this year to be a hard one...
berni - Memberhead and neck surgeon
Ooh, right, well, I've got this problem with a stiff neck 😉
Venture capitalist, investing in young, IP rich, technology companies. It's going to be a tough time ahead for these young compainies.
I know about PCT too...!
Firefighter - business as usual. Few more RTCs due to weather... well, due to bad driving, but they always blame the road! 🙂
Account Director for a Financial Service Company specialising in the Credit Industry.
Things are good and bad - some sectors are doing well and within the market there is now a lot of focus on retaining and managing existing customers as opposed to a few years back when focus was on acquisition of customers. But things are bad on the traditional Mortgage and Loans side of things as no lending is really going on.
Mergers and acquisitions 😈
Teacher of A level ICT at a sixth form college. We've gone from 800 students to 2000 in the last ten years, there are loads of older staff who will be retiring soon so my post should be pretty secure and a lack of local 'first job' prospects should see us with more demand (you get more cash for an EMA + child benefits than you do on the dole).
Capn - We always do a good deal where we can, but dont forget Cartridges are a loss leader!!!
Indeed.....may have to get in touch when I'm next in need. Stock anything else? Am after a pair of Le Chameau.....
I survey buildings for asbestos at the moment. Business seems consistent due to our key client being in the public sector but am expecting to see the market turn down in about 6 months.
I really should start looking at retraining but can't really afford to take the pay cut, double edge sword so it seems.
Budgie, Do you sell H&K? I always liked the look of a folding stock MP5!
IT Manager

Civil Servant for huge Government Financial department.
I was a Risk analyst until 2nd Jan when my job ceased to exist, I then started with a new department on 5th Jan as an Investigator. Today, my second day in my new job, I'm at home because of man-flu, not the greatest start to my career in my new department 🙁 Even working for a Government Department isn't safe these days. We merged with another Govt department in 2005 & have lost 12,500 jobs in the last 3 years & there are plans to lose another 12,500 jobs in the next 3 years.
you're forgetting i do 'colouring in'

IT desktop support in a small photographic products manufacturing firm. perhaps surprisingly, we're not doing too badly... probably cos most of our sales are export, and the exchange rate is doing us a massive favour. so is the price of silver.
I work at same company as Takisawa2, Quality Engineer, Medical / Brewery Depts. Orders for medical bouyant, but little else happening
I'm a freelance video editor, things are a little quiet but I'm ticking over at the moment and managing to pay the bills. It is quiet but that could all change with a phone call, after all people watch more telly when they can't afford to go out.
Pensioner
Photographic Retoucher at large very well know Advertsing Agency in London. Plus freelance work which pays for bikes. Love the fact that the Spice Girls, Amy Whinehouse and Sugababes have paid for my last 3 bikes.
IT Recruitment, very busy at the moment, still lots of people hiring.
S_Works - Surely you don't need to re-touch pictures of the radiant beauty that is Amy Winehouse?
Celebs pay for my bikes and bits too. And a 20-1 bet on the winner of Big Brother bought my Fox 36 forks last summer. Very satisfying.
freelance sound, video and lighting engineer
mostly corporate so felt the pinch a bit late last year, this year is looking busy though. Just having to work a bit harder, no flexibility to cherry pick work. lots of christmas party type stuff got canceled though and budgets are cutting back across the board on conferences. glad i don't do rock and roll, they are feeling it worse.
I advise and council 18-35yr old women in need of guidance....gig...giggity.giggi
Nice one with the bet chakaping. So who do I put my money this time. 2 years ago I was slimming a rather chubby Amy Whinehouse down. The drugs do that now.
Office manager for a private hire taxi and limousine company.
You must have some stories to tell?.....at the very least you must have lots of knickers left in after the punters, wee'ers, lucky lad getting a threesome etc??
Patent Attorney - so far the work's still coming in - have to meet up with archaic and grynch ...

we all know they don't wear knickers these days Hora
