OK, TSY accused me of starting a "what does your username mean" thread and I quickly checked my "topics started" section to double check I hadn't... whilst digging I found I had started a thread that died after 2 asnwers.... probably 'cos of the time of day I psoted it and the boring title.

so I'm going to try again after the positiveness and success of emsz's recent thread ๐Ÿ™‚

What do you think other people's opinion of you is, and does that differ from how you percieve yourself?

for example:

"people think i'm super cool and awesome and rad and well gud at inglish an stuff yeah, mah peeps alwayz come to me for advice and speeling adivce innit... but deep down i'm not cool, i set traps for small animals using dental floss, this worries me and i often dont sleep well at night... innit"

Do people really care what others think of them on an internet forum?

I think anyone I know will tell you I act the same in real life as I do here

Apparently someone thinks I am AWESOME, they kept putting it in the tags. The reality is I don't really care what people think, in general, about me.
I have good solid friends who clearly have a good opinion and that's what matters to me.

i have no idea what other users think of me. I was indirectly accused of being a bully on here yesterday which made me smile and frown in equal measure.

I think that perception of your online persona rests upon how well you can project your personality through a keyboard. Nothing to do with how smart you are though.

I'm the same person in real life as I am on here - only fatter ๐Ÿ™‚

I couldnt give a toss what people think of me, either on here or in the real world. As long I have the love and respect of my wife and daughters, that's more than enough for me. I dislike most people anyway, as I'm sure probably comes across...

'socially awkward sex pest who spends too much time in the internet'

Applogies Phil, I wasn't sure it was you, I'm pretty sure I consistantly called you philofconsequence for ages though.

"awkward argumentative get who spends too much time on the internet"

I definitely polarise opinion both here and in real life.

Being only an occasional poster I doubt whether people even recognise my name let alone have an opinion of me.
In the real world, similar to don simon, I have a great bunch of friends who are all equal no matter what our social/ career standing is. I couldn't give a chuff if there are some people who don't like me.

Interesting that it's assumed I meant what people think of your online persona... I originally meant in real life but neglected to make a point of it! My fault.

Me:
- Online... People probably think I'm [s]a bit of[/s] an idiot who doesnt take the threads seriously.

- Real life... Very organised and plans ahead to the point of probably sapping some of the fun out of things by worrying about as many possible outcomes as my brain can think of. Hopefully people think I'm a nice guy who'll go out of his way to help people... but reluctant to ask for help when I need it as it would mean admitting I cant handle everything in the world.

- Actual self.... Same as the "real life" description as above I suppose, I'm incredibly honest about myself, my weaknesses and my experiences when I'm with my close friends. Very unlikely to ask for help as I don't like the feeling of not being able to cope, help or be completely independent. Bit of an extrovert when around new people, subconsciously to stamp a bit of perceived authority on the room so people don't treat me like I'm stupid at the start of a relationship... but I quickly open up and try to be as honest and "real" as possible.

Gutted. I was hoping real world Phil actually does punctuate his conversations with people by holding up pictures of lolcats.

I knew what you meant Phil.

I've at times in my life been utterly shocked at what people, even some who think they're close to me, have decided 'I am like' as a person.

I'm probably not that different to what I'm like on here, probably.

Ability to kill a thread conversation stone dead in a few words is replicated in the real world, yes.

Just grabbing onto this and some cod psychology, I think extroverts may be more often concerned at how other people perceive themselves than introverts and thus the responses you'll get to the question you posed may vary as much by personality type than how people perceive themselves.
Or something like that.
Though I'm not convinced that cod share the same thought processes in the first place to be truthful.

One symptom of clinical depression is having the same opinion of yourself as other people have of you.

Dunno, they seem to deal with things in the same way.

I am seen as being well organised (I generally get given the tasks that involve sorting things out), very laid back (not fazed about things, just get on with it) and quite out going (I will talk to anyone, can make conversation, etc.).

I am in fact, horribly disorganised and do everything last minute (or not at all and make excuses). I am a terrible worrier but keep things to myself so as not to burden other people. I am also very shy but force myself to not come across that way both for my job and becuase that is the persona I would like to have. I am very concious about what people think of me and how what I do affects them.

Rather sad isn't it?!

So that's Hot tea, and bleach so far this month.
Do you think there's money in a book titled?

"What goldfish don't like."

When I was a kid we had a goldfish called Engelbert (which is a cool name for a goldfish before anyone raises an eyebrow).
One morning I came down and Engelbert wasn't in his tank, which was atop of the music centre. Looked around the unit - no fish, underneath - no fish, then finally spotted a little lifeless tail sticking out of an LP.
It was the best of Des O'Connor.
What a way to go.

We had a goldfish that lived for like 100 years or something.
Our cat got it for us out of a neighbours pond. Came home from school and it was lying there on the backdoor step, chucked it in a bucket, it floated upside down for a while then twitched for a bit then was okay. Had awesome cat bite scars on its torso an' everything.

should've started a goldfish thread ๐Ÿ˜€ band member had a "cartoon goldfish" as we called it, it was HUGE.... the length of a 500ml bottle of water and appropriately fat and in proportion with that length!

One of the major benchmarks in my development as an adult is that I realised that there was no way I could know what other people think of me and that I should just do my own thing. On the whole, I think people like me more for this realisation...

Daresay they would be well chuffed, can't stand me and the feeling is mutual
Don't suppose they will have to worry too much more once the discipline case is sorted and I have gone
