Thinking about getting a dashcam, again after watching two cars run the same red light in front of me thus afternoon.
Local VW dealer will hard wire a Nextbase 322 but I don’t know if this is any good.
What does the panel reckon?
Nextbase 622GW add rear view cam.
I got the cheapest Nextbase one with GPS, it seems to work fine bit I've not had to actually use it in anger yet so it's just been quietly recording (I hope....).
Local police want two minutes either side of the incident; is that easy enough to do?
Nextbase again here, if you can get one with the rear view module all the better. The price difference should be negligible.
They tend to record in sections on a constant loop so it overwrites the oldest footage, if you use a reasonable size SD card then you will always have footage going back far enough

Our local force submission site states this, but mine records in 2 minute chunks, and they've never quibbled on the few times I've sent them stuff.
They're not that hard to DIY fit, just one wire piggy backed into a fuse that goes live with the ignition. The hardest parts are finding the right fuse and popping the trim off to hide the cable.
^ exactly that. Owners forums are handy for fuse numbers. Trim is easy enough if you're careful.
Or Garmin as I like the size.
The Garmin ones are quite neatly sized, not sure what the score with getting the dealer to fit is though, and don’t want Halfords wiring it up to invalidate the warranty.
You don't have to wire it up to the fuse box if there is no wish to do so, just use the cigarette lighter socket will be fine.
I bought a viafo a129 (i think that is the number).
As far as i can tell it is working fine and the footage seems good. Plus it is tiny so i can hide it behind my rear view mirror.
It was easy enough to wire up one i realised it wouldn't work unless i connected the earth.
I've got the cheapest nextbase with GPS in the Octavia. Did have a suction mount but replaced it with a stick on mount from eBay as suction one kept falling off. Bonus is a lower profile so sits behind the rear view mirror.
Easy job to hardwire by running the cable down the trim behind the A pillar and into the fuse box in the side of the dash. Certainly wouldn't pay someone to fit it. Appreciate a rear view camera may be a bit more involved.
We got a "his and hers" Gokluk t4 set a few years back.. seem great but only 1080p at 30fps.
I think 60fps is minimum for being able to reliably read moving number plates.
I spent more than I'd originally planned to on a Thinkware F800 with rear camera and it's been flawless. A 128GB microSD card was also not cheap but means I've got a lot of recordings before they start getting over-written, and the big silver button manually stores the last couple of minutes' recordings in a protected directory that doesn't get over-written.
I fitted it, including carefully pulling back the roof liner and routing the wires _behind_ the curtain airbags, and then asked a local auto electrics place to hard-wire the fuse connection. Because the rest of it was already done, they only charged £25 for about half an hour's work and a couple of fuses and it's been working perfectly since then.
I'd recommend at least 1080p and 60fps if you can. Look for good low-light / night time recording too, there are usually plenty of independent reviews around. Mine came with a whole load of other features like lane assist and speed limit alerts which I promptly turned off - I'd rather it was silent and unobtrusive most of the time. I even stuck a piece of tape over the LEDs as they were a little bit too bright at night.
