New one needed, to replace a 17year old Patterson Suprima!

What's a good reliable boiler make to look at please?

Been offered a Main by 2 boiler men but the sound like they're offering the cheapest they can get, not necessarily the best (for the money)

We don't drive the cheapest cars we can get or use the cheapest washing machine we could buy so same applies to a boiler.

Ta.

I have an Ideal Vogue which comes with a 10year warrenty. It's very quiet which is a god send after the last 2 boilers I've had to live with. It's only been in 3 months tho so can't comment on reliability, the old Ideal boilers get a slating but general industry opinion seems to be favourable of these new generation Ideal boilers. Don't know what they're like price wise as mine was in with a larger job and I was just wanting a boiler with a long warranty.

Look for an Opentherm compatible one.

The one with the longest warranty

This, combined with something repair people are familiar with (e.g. Worcester). Our ever-so-reliable German-made Viessmann has had most of its insides replaced over the years. The BG repair people used to always say "what's that? Never seen one before" on the regular occasions when they came to fix it.

Worcester, I have 38cdi with the internet controls. You may not think you need them, but you do.

One thing I will say is if you buy Worcester they have a pet of their site that tells you of local installers. Get 3 quotes. I went with one of their engineers, very happy with the work and well priced.

Which? only have Worcester and Vaillant as best buys. The chap who services or boiler prefers Vaillant as they are easier to fix for common problem.

If you are going to get insurance then I was told summer is a good time by the British Gas engineer (nice bloke) ... you can then negotiate a better rate for the insurance.

also if anything does go wrong then the engineer will often get the part quicker or even have it in their van using a make they service regularly.

If you get a boiler with a decent guarantee, insurance is pretty pointless.

My viesman came with an 8 year warranty if fitted by an approved installer and serviced every year with a stamp in the book. It's covered for parts and labour in that time, therefore not requiring any extra insurance cover.

I had a Baxi in a 6 month rented property last year and it was really noisy especially at night when off. Was in a holiday rental house (i had it thru the winter) and owners were wealthy, so boiler was serviced regularly, but don't know it's age.
Anyhow, it put me off having a Baxi in my own home.

My installer told me a few years ago that installers like Worcester because they're quick to install and the parts have a huge markup. He installed a Vaillant for us (which ironically broke after 11 months when a sensor clogged but then was rock solid for several years.)

I think the boiler insurance is a bit of a con. Unless you have a child <1 or are >70 (iirc) the response time is usually rubbish (>2 days). I'd rather buy a decent brand and pay a few hundred for an emergency repair same day.

If I was buying new I'd pay for the one with the longest warranty and not bother with repair insurance.

fwiw we have an Ideal now, which has leaked several times and isn't quiet.

Boiler and Gas are the only things in the house I can't fix...
I was pushed into this by the OH as she wanted to know if it broke could I fix it and i had to say no.... that said pile of *** boiler has packed up 3-4 times in the last 2-3 years!

I'd get rid but i really need to redo the whole hot water plumbing in the house 1st...
