We will be in touch
Anybody watching or racing this weekend? If your racing what number are ya? And if you've been to watch before (i'm a virgin here) is it as totally mental as it looks? Walked the track today and some of those mountain jumps are somewhat scary even for a 'switch off emotions and turn the throttle' sort of rider like me.
Bloody hell, is it that time already? Sunday should be good, weather-wise, I haven't been for donks, must have been '79 or '80, but it was completely nuts, bikes and quads tearing along the main straight at silly speeds, and sweaty, sand-covered blokes at the top of the big piles heaving at bikes which are just stuck upright in the sand.
Great fun, loads of photo-opportunities if you can get a good viewing point.
I might make a run down early Sunday morning now, thanks for the heads-up about it. 😀
Seen it a few times when it used to be free. ....!
Yep I am going
Is it on the TV this year?
Get down to the straight for the start. It sounds like thunder when they set off. Around midway they're going max chat and it's quite sight to see them spread out coming towards you. Last year, you could tell who the pros were - the ones jumping. Everyone else got round.
Also, bring waterproofs, and cash.
I was aiming to do it this year but unfortunately my bike got knicked. Next year...
Awesome event - used to go watch when I live darn sarf
As the bikes hammer down the starting straight, a large brown sandy damp cloud would take off and drift over the crowd. Carnage for the next three hours or so. Brilliant to watch and listen to. Chris walker used to hammer round on a Kawasaki each year.
Well hopefully you'll make it down Count and get the fix ;).
They don't do a mass start for all entrants anymore it's all categorised into quads, sidecars, solos etc. Looking forward to the quads thundering down the straight at nearing a ton :D.
Eskay - it's cost us £120 for the Saturday and Sunday for 3 of us. You could say that's expensive but as a motocross rider you sort of expect anything and everything to do with MX to be on the expensive side.
Used to love it in my teenage racing years (late 80's early 90's), brutal race on the arms and upper body not to mention the full engine strip down afterwards - do you run specific fuelling/gearing for the straights or for the dunes?.... Was always a lottery as to choice and I used to relish getting my elbows out on the corners and fighting for my place. Scott gardener/Paul Chappia/rob herring were my contemporaries at the time.
Is this the race where the crossers get taken from council estate parks and unloaded from transits onto a beach for a change ?
Adult quads and sidecars main race today. Absolutely nuts.
You seem to know pretty well how it works Edric, I think I might've seen you around today actually...
Had a look at the prices, and I'm out. I'd need to fuel up the Skoda, at least £20-30, £20 ticket, £5-10 parking, just makes it a bit too pricey for me at the mo'. 😐
That sucks Count. I'd agree it's a fairly expensive weekend but what a buzz. I'll try and get a video uploaded on Sunday/Monday of the starts of each main race. Adult solos tomorrow...circa 600 riders from 125 2 stroke to 500 4 strokes. That's gonna make the hairs on the back of my neck stand up!
Great race with Simpson romping away with it, shame Knights bike let him down.
First dry Weston I have ever experienced, very strange.
Being at pit bitch in about 90 was one of the worst days of my life.
Totally exposed to the rain and by crikey did it rain and rain..... I can recall a smoke going out about have smoked. cold wet miserable.
But the sun came out some years. Marshalling on the 1st dune mad me sick one year to much co1.
used to be around bonfire night, parking/van camping on the beach watching the firework firefight.
I always like southport BR. Had some good nights and some good races there.
Did a couple of Westons back in the 80s .
One of the scariest bits was doing a Le Mans start (do they still do that?) ,sprinting across the sand in full gear and praying that a Maico 500 (that had been lying on it's side for half an hour)would fire up 🙂 .
Then the joy of trying to avoid being run over in the dunes ,by quads and sidecars,it was nuts.

I knew Paul and Scott for a while,but then I went all Enduro[/i] 😉
Yeah Simpson was well away, didn't quite lap 'everybody' did he? The quad leader yesterday lapped every single other rider at least once. I think Knight would've got him tbh he was riding a cracking race until like you say he was let down. The start was awesome again! Grinning like a Cheshire cat me!
fasthaggis - sort of. They run to the bikes and pile to get to the front of the queue but they have a mass start controlled by some gates and then a sand dune to filter out the start to stop 500 riders all piling into first corner. They also let the pro/fast riders to the front...kinda pointless imo as the really quick riders will get to the front anyway.
Pretty much as perfect a day weather-wise as anyone could want. If entry and parking had been cheaper I might have gone down.
And if I'd had a half-full tank...
Count I didn't pay for parking, got down early and parked a5 minute walk from the ticket trailer.
Bike number 145 had the biggest crash I saw, think his shock must of gone because for the last few laps he was riding a pogo stick.
Bloke on a CR500 made it to the finish as well.
Bradley I don't think Knighter wouldn't of caught Simpson.if the conditions were vile maybe but whatever it was a good day.
Was that the CRF pig? I saw a crf being towed back with the rider sat on it, touching the rear wheel with his rear fender where the shock has obviously gone.
Yeah that evo CR500 was great. Looked in good nick too, worth a few bob that one. I've a CR250 '84 in the garage that's about 200 quid from being finished to near showroom. Love the evo bikes.
