We are having a website built . We haven’t got a ****ing clue how they are made. Therefore we don’t know what questions to ask the man. He is just waiting for us to send him stuff.
It will have 5 pages. How big is a page?
How many pages are on the crc homepage?

A page can be as long as you want but a user wants to find the content they are looking for on your site as quickly and easily as possible so design your site around that.

Do you know what content you are going to present? Start there then think about how you will present it

If you don't know how big a page is, how do you know it'll have five pages?

A good designer will go through this stuff with you.

How many pages are on the crc homepage?

One.

Are you sure you want to go with a web designer for just a few pages, granted this is your first site so you may prefer someone to build it for you but it really isn't hard to build a site if you use one of the big template sites, have a look at WIX or Squarespace, Weebly is also very good.

They all tend to have free trials, hove a play around and see if you can do one yourself.

Ask him what his rework price is

If it isn't something like wix or squarespace but rather Wordpress then ask who will do the security updates

"Pages" are basically infinite in length, but shouldn't be. Try and think of them as templates you will use over and over. For example CRC is likely 4 or 5 core pages but obviously used hundreds of times over.

As said a decent designer should walk you should this. Don't jump straight into designing ensure you have the structure in place first. Think of it like building a house. You wouldn't paint the walls before drawing plans up

Am I right in thinking you have a shop zippykona? Apologies if I am muddling you up with someone else.

I am inept at pretty much everything but managed to make a passable we page with online store for my father in law. I used Wix, I found it a bit easier than squarespace (and as a veteran podcast listener I feel like I betrayed the countless 10% squarespace offer codes that I could have had from Buckles and Pip!)

As above, have a go.If you can use MS Word, you can use Wix.

The sitemap link at the very foot of that page gives some idea of the skeleton structure of that site.

As others have said think user, user, user and user. Don't allow one person to dictate how a website looks and feels just on their personal preferences.

Find websites you like and find easy to use and on paper draw up a structure. One A4 for the homepage and lay them all on the floor and really consider how a new user would find stuff with no knowledge of your business.

Limit scrolling.

Accessibility is important.

Zippy, I think stw can help.

Perhaps rewind and tell us the why you're having a website built.
Who will/might visit it?
How do you hope your business benefit?

We currently have a single page websitefor our shop that a friend knocked up for us over lunch 10 years ago.
Obviously it's totally out of date and we had kind of forgotten about it as Face Book is a lot easier to use.
With lock down we thought we should have a better web presence for when we are googled.
We don't want to sell on it , just have our shop windows out there in internet land.
When we look at other shop's websites we can say yes that's nice but we really have no idea what we are looking at. We are website dyslexic.
I think I need to have a look at those make your own website pages just to work out what's needed.

Bare minimum one page. A homepage with some intro blurb about your company, some pics and contact details. If you're just wanting to be out there but not sell then I'd stick to one page.

we really have no idea what we are looking at

I normally approach it from:

1. List all of the groups of people who are likely to visit the site eg. locals, people responding to an ad, people looking for something particular

2. List what each group will be looking for eg. directions to visit you,  an idea of what sort of stuff you sell

3. Make sure your site has all of those things and an easy way to find them.

Usually sites are just people putting up what they think is interesting without working out who would actually be interested in it apart from them.  Start from the visitors viewpoint

Go back a step and pretend you are putting a leaflet together. What would be on the leaflet? Where on the leaflet would you put it? What is important? What needs to be there? Where do you think people would look to find out what they want to know/how to get in touch? It shouldn’t be difficult - it reads to me like you are just over-thinking this massively.

Good advice from jondoh in my view.

I would say that Facebook, Google My business and Bing Places are the place to make sure you have address, phone number, opening times, a couple of pictures and a couple of sentences about your business.

If you have them, you don't need a website in my view.

You certainly don't need 5 pages that you can't edit or manage yourself in future.
