[Closed] Weather related mood

Being Scottish you think I'd be used to grey skies and rain, and the always disappointing season we call summer. However I'm finding it particularly affecting my mood in the past couple of weeks, to the point I am physically craving sun and blue skies, catching glimpses of the sun at Wimbledon and wanting to throw shit at the TV.

Ive been getting out cycling, climbing etc but I was wondering if any fellow STW'er in the west of Scotland have noticed the weather particularly grey in the last 6+ weeks or am I imagining it? I've been trying some statistics or data to compare hours of actual sunshine month on month but can seem to find what I'm looking for.

There have been plenty of threads discussing the big ol' D word and I'm pretty close to going to the doctors, or could end up standing in the garden in my pants shouting at to clouds tell them to **** off.

Wasn't there something in the news recently about vitamin D3 from animal sources being more important to health than D2 or did I imagine that?

I'm in the east, Edinburgh, but yeah getting a little tired of it. I'm from Wales so used to the rain but even Wales seems to be drier than Scotland at the moment. I definitely don't want to go back to the south east but I'm beginning to think Scotland might not be the place for me.

Hope things improve anyway and don't put off going to the docs if you think it might help.

Central belt - but understand how you feel.

Maybe it is more obvious this year as we had a glimpse of what a 'nice' summer would be like during May. It isn't affecting my mood as such - but has made me decide to move to a house with less outdoor space. I just don't use it, and seem to spend the good weather cutting grass or hedges. I am also planning to downsize and release some cash to travel (to warm places) a bit more.

I'm trying to make sure that when the sun does shine I can really enjoy it.

Good luck.

You've said it out loud ... well played.... And I bet you know that deep down the weather is just an excuse.... I know I knew it was when I first had a moan at a Doc

Make the call ... its your health you are talking about.

Good luck

Having said that .... You know that hot blast of air you get when getting off the plane on your summer hols... I had that last week when returning to sunny stansted from cold n damp Edinburgh !! Blooming hell it was bleak up there for July !!

Interesting that a few others are aware of the greyness, it was the wettest June on record this year in Edinburgh I believe.

I do everything I can to keep the serotonin levels up with exercise, eating well, I don't drink etc Perhaps I should look into natural supplements to help.

Otherwise maybe the doctor can prescribe an all expenses paid trip to a sun-drenched tropical island paradise.

It's been relatively dry further north. Most of the reservoirs are very low.

Having said that, it's wet today.

In bad summers, I notice my SAD symptoms get worse (if we had a good spell of weather for the preceding couple of weeks or so).

To be honest, it hasn't been that wet(i think the East got it more than we did)...it's just the unrelenting cloud cover and grey skies.

Yeah, when living in Edinburgh I was aware of long periods of cloudy days. North and West is the place to go.

Spoke to a guy on Arran sat week who has a small hydro system at his house, reckoned he produced 10x the amount of power in June this year than June last year.

Weather doesn't really bother me much, I probably bike more in the darker months as I have other stuff such as family days during better weather. I tend to ignore the forecast as well, unless I'm going up proper hills, as most of the time it's utter shite, there's been a couple of weekends recently they've been predicting terrible weather, and it's been fine.

I have a mate who seems to be really affected by it, if it was me, and it affected me that much, I wouldn't be living here.

Here in Fife, we had a week of on/off rain last week, but mostly its just been depressing overcast. I know exactly how you feel.
Wouldn't say its been particularly worse in that regard than previous 3-4 'summers' though. Pattern over the last few years seems to be that what little sun we do get comes between 10-3, and by the time its time to get out riding in the evening its overcast and cold again. Whilst threads pop up on here going "oh noes, i'm melting", we got a day time high of 12°C earlier this week......

It tends to really get me down if i've been on holiday somewhere sunny, then come back to weeks on end of grey. Tried a multi vitamin with vitD which seems to help a bit.

My impression is that's exactly what it's been like for 6weeks, wish i could find some empirical data to back that up...Whether it's been worse this year than in previous i don't know, but i'm definitely feeling more jaded by it all this time round.

I was in Ayr three weeks ago and it was solid sun for the 3-4 days I was there.

week 1 of school hols/annual leave here. Just back from a few days in dryish Fife and sat at home in the rain (East Kilbride) today. Off to sunny Aviemore tomorrow to annoy scotroutes for a week 🙂

Hoping to get out on road bike this afternoon as haven't ridden for just over a week...

I've had this in the past, where you look forward to a season and the weather lets you down and before you know you are shouting at clouds. As others have suggested, it's symptomatic of a deeper mental health issue. There's no mileage in it mate, you gotta let it go. Forget looking for stats that validate how you feel, all you are doing is fueling your downward spiral. Jump off it and start looking after yourself in whatever way you need to. Good luck!

Wishaw in the west? Really?

The civilised side of Harthill services innit!

This is what the dividing line between the Weegies of the West and the savages from the land of salt and sauce looks like....

😆

I had a thought years ago of trying to map a salt and sauce border, but it meant eating an awful lot of fried sausages, and quite frankly I'm portly enough as it is....

I ate a steak pie supper in Bathgate yesterday lunchtime and when he asked me if I wanted everything on it I stupidly said yes.

Unwrapped it to discover it drenched in manky brown vinegar masquerading as sauce.

They're little better than animals.

completely threw me when asked if I wanted salt and sauce first time went for a chippie in Edinburgh (and, I guess, applies to Fife too). Especially as it's phrased "dyuwan solnsoss?" 🙂

but then they didn't have red pudding suppers, either..

The local chippie in Aviemore will do sauce if you ask for it. It's kept in the fridge 🙂

My son went to uni in Edinburgh and has come out of it unscathed except for addiction to solnsoss.

Well, make that 8 weeks. Another two weeks of cold grey riding with the occasional drizzle, and i'm looking out of the window right now at gloom that's verging on dark, and yet again, it'll be the windproof jersey and arm warmers for the group ride tonight.

I will confess there was some blue sky yesterday - while I was mowing the lawn 😕

I was working not far from St Andrews today and the drizzle was cooling on the bare arms, it might get better tomorrow

Worse when we seem to get decent May with lowest rainfall and get suckered into thinking it's going to get better. And it doesn't...

Tried to square it off that it's better being out on my bike regardless, and a little rain keeps it from getting too dry and keeps the walkers down.

Bathgate is tantamount to Wedgie overspill so no telling what they'll put on chips. Needs sauce - red variety!

Nothing prepares you for just how keek a summer in Scotland is.

Back in May I discussed coming off my Sertraline with my doctor, but now I am seriously considering speaking to him about upping the dose because the weather has been so poor and it has brought back my depression.

I would love to move back down south, but my wife and children steadfastly refuse, so I am stuck here praying for some warm, sunny weather.

We've had ~2 weeks of overcast and sometimes wet weather in Southampton and I've noticed my SAD "wooly" feeling come on in leaps and bounds, including struggling to wake up naturally before ~0700 and then feeling zombified all day.
