Hi All, I tried a video blog before but it was just general stuff I do. Based on the feedback I got I decided to try again with a more specific topic - Classic Cars.

There are a lot of car based YouTube vidoes out there but most seem to be over excited kids with loud music. tghis is a bit more sedate but hopefully not boring.

The intro to the channel explaining what it is :

The first 'real' episode around the Beaulieu Autojumble :

I am planning on new videos twice a month and I have a couple of spare videos to use in case I run out of material but might throw those in as bonus's during the first month or so.

Your thoughts, feedback etc. Also please subscribe and share etc. Let's see if we can get subscribers onto double figures!!

The audio quality is terrible, makes viewing too unpleasant. I switched off after a minute. Get the mic* further away from your mouth and knock the gain down - keep it under -6dB on the meters. Can't give any feedback on the content as I couldn't tolerate the over-modulated voice-over.

*I'll take a punt and say that you also need to buy a better quality microphone.

Microphone advice taken.

Everything so far has been on the camera mic or a headset and mic I got from a call centre.

As I said, all feedback welcome and most acted apon

I occasionally do audio recording for documentary and, in the absence of a boom mic, generally use a lavaliere mic for recording voice. This type of mic clips into your shirt/top and I think would work well for you as it’s the simplest way for you to get continuity in the quality of your voice audio - it’s going to sound the same whether you’re narrating in your office or walking around a museum or market.

On the less expensive side of the market: RØDE do the SmartLav which connects to a smartphone, and an app for recording with. That also comes with a furry wind-jammer for outdoor recording. I prefer a dedicated audio recorder, and a small dictation device like the Sony UX560 (with RØDE SC3 adaptor to convert the smartphone jack) is tiny/light and easy to carry around. We’re not talking ENG quality audio, but light years better than what you have and absolutely good enough for this project.

Your channel intro needs to be 30 seconds to 1:30 max. The graphics, well, don't use those graphics. Look at Harry's Garage for example of clean simple and appropriate graphics / style. If you're going to do a long format video then tease or cut in some of the highlights at the start - I'll watch a 20 minute video if I know there's something of interest in it but I'm not going to sit through it in hope.

If I am concerned about audio quality with GoPro Hero or Canon DSLR I tend to use a separate recorder I had lying around.

A ZOOM H5.

I quite like the honesty and integrity of it.

Already disagreeing with your definition of what a classic is tho!

Okay - I will have a look around for a suitable microphone and redo the voice overs.

Just looked at a couple of Harry's Garage clips and he just has a couple of sponsors graphics. My thinking was to have a short split between the intro saying what was in the clip and the actual clip itself.  The pictures are examples of the kinds of cars you will see. I guess I could shorted the section.

The videos are going to be 5 - 10 minutes long initially so I decided against doing the highlights preview. If I get longer clips I will probably include teasers from later. I do try to tell you right at the start what sort of thing you will see though.

Cynic-al - you dare disagree with my definition of a classic? Are you disagreeing about the cars I chose or the films? To be fair, I can decide what I really mean by classic but 'Clips of cars that I find a bit interesting or unusual' wasn't as catchy or easy to say.

I have released another video BTW which does tell you what you will be seeing.

I am not at all interested in cars but I liked the vlog - good enthusiasm which is the whole point Imo. Noticeably better sound after the intro to my very untrained ears!). I am looking at doing something similar (not cars) so keeping an eye on responses!!

DrJ - Give it a go with as little expenditure as possible first. Do a few mock ups with your camera phone. You may discover you take all the pleasure out of what you normally enjoy because you are stuck behind the lens. So far I am about  £70 out of pocket to this little venture after buying the microphone for £30 this afternoon.

I can live with that but I was chatting with a bloke who spent nearly £1,000 on cameras and lenses to do car races and realised he never got to actually watch the racing as he was busy behind the camera...

Glad you like my humble efforts. Please subscribe, even if you don't watch the amazing forthcoming episodes, as I am desperate to get into double figures for subscribers!!  🙂

Slow down! At the start you're talking twice as fast as you should be. I leapt forward 5 minutes and you've calmed down - much better.

So the Duval is working then...........

I find that if I consciously speak slower I sound like a dull Geography teacher but if I then try to speak faster I am like a rabbit on acid. A difficult balance but I will persevere.

Thanks. All advice welcome

Just a difference of opinion - you say the Mini is a classic but the Imp not. I'm more of a fan of unusual cars, you see Minis everywhere. I find E-types dull also 🙂 Mind you, I can't walk past a chrome bumper 911

Actually I am a big fan of the Imp too. Did you know its engine was originally designed to be a generator rather than a car engine?

I agree about unusual cars rather than just 'classic cars' and if you subscribe you will see me break my own rules about what is a classic all the time.

Check out this mornings trip to Wilton House for proof. Also enjoy the improved sound quality

I did not know that (although I do know Lotus' 1.6 was derived from a pump engine I think). I'm fond of them as my last remaining aunt had one. She always reversed at high speed as her husband told her slipping the clutch would wear it out!

Liked the video - we think the same on 911s (that blue one was not 80s tho). BUT... at 6 mins, that's  Jensen, not a Bristol...and...Toyota 2000GT? Don't think so! 🙂

Jenson and not a Bristol is correct. That was hoping for some comments and corrections - t is all about audience interaction.

The Toyota  GT2000 was genuine I think. It became the Supra but this one was definitely an early one, check the badges at 7:06

As always, happy to be corrected

Ah, it'll be a Celica - I thought you meant the 2000GT (which always seem white)

White is Japans racing colour, a bit like British Racing Green* for the UK.

There is a Hilman Imp coupe that sometimes goes to the Wilton meets. I will make sure I get some footage of that if you subscribe.

*We chose green as a thank you to Ireland for letting us hold races over there when the UK government banned any road sport in the UK

Bit dumb question but...  if you're using your phone as a camera, isn't it a problem if you also use a lav mike plugged into the phone? I suppose you just need a long cable...

A nice article on photographing classic cars by the brilliant Amy Shore:

The very article I read before starting.

Most of it is about the business side and my Vlog is very much an 'evenings and weekends'hobby to stop me getting bored.

I am deliberately starting small with clips between 5-10 minutes so it does not become a chore. I want to see if I really enjoy it in which case I might invest in a proper camera or if I get bored (which happens easily). I will give it 6-12 months and if I am still enjoying then I will get a proper camera probably.

Until then I will take Amy's advice about being nice to everyone, never undercutting or doing for free the work that someone else might get paid for. I will also work on widening my contacts to get more invites and exclusive access to stuff but I will try to keep it about relevant stuff as there are other channels for brand new Ferrari and Bugatti reviews. Having said that, I am partial to a supercar or two

Have cpnsidered "WCA's Sexpond Sagas"? Catchy clickbait title...

I find myself wondering who you’re aiming this at. It feels a bit too say-what-you-see, naming and describing what passes by, with a little bit of trivia occasionally thrown in. The pace of the narration tends to suggest disinterest - in what, I’m not quite sure. The break-neck speed is really dynamic if you have lots of crack, but here it just feels like you’re racing to get the current sentence over with.

I know you don’t want to spend much - understandably - but don’t underestimate the general production quality on YouTube. It’s easy and relatively inexpensive to get good quality video/audio/music/graphics and so the bar is set pretty high nowadays. Viewers will be forgiving if the content is engaging; but otherwise the numerous, better produced alternatives to your channel will take the views.

Do you have plans or ideas to develop your format? What is it that you want to bring to people?

Good feedback Mr ThreeFish, thank you.

I shall ponder your points, this is very early days for me trying this. The 'say what you see' point is valid I guess on the BMW, Porsche and Ferrari clip. For others I will try to increase the amount of 'personal viewpoint' as opposed to 'interesting trivia'. The Wilton Breakfast Meet or Beaulieu Autojumble had more of my comments rather than just facts for example. I will try harder the get the commentary pace balanced.

What is it that I want to bring to people?

I wanted a channel that wasn't just Max Power style cars and music but also wasn't at the Jay Leno price range of cars plus a bit of background stuff as you see me try to keep my cars on the road.

Hopefully people will enjoy the mix of car shows, owners classics, dirty hands repair work and me thoughts on it.

Tomorrow there will be a different style of clip,. the first hands dirty one, where I try and repair the car you saw at the end of the latest episode.

Ever wondered about a Range Rover?

Or perhaps 'chipping' a Range Rover?
