I just discovered a leak this morning next to my hot water tank. The water is dripping out of a black cylinder, which is labelled 'Powerful Magnetic Field Inside'. I have absolutely no idea what this is. The cylinder has what looks like a metal bolt on the top which could be tightened (?), but the leak is coming from a little further down where the top and bottom fit together.
Does anyone know what this black cylinder is? Should I just wrap something around it to stem the flow or attempt to tighten something? - I don't want a major leak on my hands!
Thank in advance x
Tie a rag or something around it for a start, and put a bucket bowl underneath. then look for a LOCAL plumber.
DO NOT phone one of those 24hr call out ripoff merchants, who will charge you £150 for a callout.
it might just need tightening, but if you don't know what you are doing, try to find someone who does. I'm not a plumber so i'll leave one of them to tell if it needs tightening
it sounds like a solenoid valve, with the magnetic info.
anythiong like the link below?
http://www.airsolenoidvalve.com/detail109915-diaphragmmagneticvalve.htm
the bolt on the top holds the coil onto the shaft where there is a plunger inside.
there may be some small bolts holding the two lower halves together, 8mm or 10mm spanner size.
attempt to turn clockwise, one or two may be slightly loose.
if any resistance is felt, they are probably tight enough.
shot in the dark, but possibly some help!
OMFG!
Magnaclean filter i think you will find ,which is supposed to filter out sludge from heating system ,you should have large black plastic spanner to tighten the lid if this fails to stop leak call a plumber as it will req replacement (under warranty)a lot of these have leaked and the makers are aware of this problem , hope this helps
It sounds like a magnaflow filter, used to remove magnetite sludge from CH system, the unit is a bit bigger than acoke can and has 2 pipes entering it yes? There should be isolation valves on these pipes, switch of central heating and close both valves. The o ring underneath the cap has gone or lid needs tightened, there's a special tool for this sold with the unit. [url= http://www.adeysolutions.co.uk/ ] Should be easy to get another, but try not to involve a plumber as this is an easy 3o second job, hope this helps.
For a temporary fix, B&Q sell a small roll of self-amalgamating tape. Could be difficult to apply if the joint is hard up against the wall. If I remember rightly, you just stretch it to 50% and then wrap around the joint. And book a plumber.
I have a roll even though I have an assorted box of push fit fittings and solder fittings. Easier to slap a bit of tape on before hunting round the loft for the bits to fix it!
I think its this, although B&Q seem to have got the description mixed up:
