I bought 4 rib eye fillets from asda last night at 16 quid per kilo.
The moment they hit the preheated George Foreman the drip tray fills instantly with water, and the steaks turn into a pale grey colour instead of searing to a golden brown.
I think its unnacceptable and I can't believe the practice is tolerated.
Its not like its difficult to detect.
Water is the last of your worries, what about the other shit they unnecessarily put in our food?
The supermarkets say it's because it's because customers want lean cuts of meat and to keep them tender they replace the fat with water.
I say it's bollocks.
Support you local butcher instead.
Chicken breast are another one. I buy these in bulk and you really have to shop around to get ones that aren't gas flushed or water injected at the right price.

I particularly hate this and try to never buy steaks from supermarkets. When you're trying to sear the meat you just end up vaguely stewing it, leaving it with nowhere near the flavour or texture it should have; It really is the devils excrement.
One way of helping this is to dry the meat out in a fan oven if you have one. Put the steaks on a plate with room for air to circulate - or even better is using a clean grill pan. Put the oven on its fan/air circulation/defrost setting for a couple of hours prior to cooking, and this helps evaporate some of the water.
Or, do as I do and support a local butcher. I've found that every single butcher I've been to has been more than willing to talk to you about meat, which cuts for what, how old to age it etc. They're always helpful, and the difference in taste from a well aged steak compared to a supermarket piuece of crap is beyond my words, and easily makes up for the pennies price difference.
£16 a kilo for supermarket ribeye? Christ...
Don´t buy meat, bread or fish in a supermarket if you want them taste like real food.

Agree with the local butcher suggestions but long working hours usually means I and probably many people shop almost exclusively from supermarkets.
Its very disappointing to see a fine fillet look like boiled dog food in seconds due to this.
I often buy my meat from costco which is an even bigger chain than asda and they don't see the need to do it.
I'm just surprised no food authorities ban the practice or at least ensure than injected meat is very obviously labelled as such.

For meat the proper butchers is the way to go. I had some ace ribeyes last weekend. No added water by eye wateringly expensive, 21 quid for 2 but worth it. All the beef sold is from a farm 20 or so miles away and proper aberdeen Angus.

Alot is made of free range chicken, but you hear nothing of battery pork, when its just as big of a problem! Danish bacon is all battery farmed 🙂
As above, support your local butcher, but still ensure its not bulk crap they have bough in from a supplier, and that its local. Alot of butchers meat is no better than supermarket meat.
We get our meet from the local butchers too - I'd rather have decent meat once per week, that crap 5 times per week.

see, i don't get that. i think there's loads of good food in this country and it doesn't have to cost a fortune either. on the other hand i've also eaten some real bollox (actual and metaphorical) in spain, france etc.

I'm on a mission to drop some winter poundage for the summer so the georgie came out after a long period of non use. Means I don't have to use oil or butter. I've lost 5 kgs this month but I think the incredible weather has alot to do with that.

Castle douglas has 4 butchers shops and I still see people buying meat
in Tesco, some folks just do not care what they eat ,if I cannot get real meat from the butcher I go vegie that day.
It's convenience though, isn't it. You give it all that about "some people just don't care, they buy their meat in Tesco", but the reality is that "some people just don't think they have the time to fanny about going from shop to shop" - that's the reality of supermarkets.
Yes it's a crying shame that butchers and other family-owned stores are going out of business, but it's just not easy to get to them sometimes.
Having said all that, the sheer fact that all the chickens for example are exactly the same weight fills me with a disgusted fear....

My wife's uncle who is an organic beef & lamb farmer had some lamb from our local Sainsburys and said it was easily as good as his own lamb prepared by his own butcher.

it is not so much the water that gets me, it is the other things they add to make sure the meat absorbs the water.

things haven't changed much.
Me n wife have been having our food delivered from a farm nearby for nearly 18 months. They do meat too of an excellent standard.
Veg and fruit box for a week including local bread and milk and a half dozen eggs costs about 60 per month. We add meat every so often and some tins. Usually about £40 every other month.
Local, proper tasty stuff that lasts all week and varied. Keeps people in jobs in the area and costs a fraction of what a trip to the supermarket seems to sting people for worse food.

Exactly. Instead of buying a kilo of fillet for 16 quid you're buying 700g of fillet and 300g of water.
Its deceit and fraud and its accepted.
Dodgy practice like this gets exposed on current affair programs in Aus and they either alter their practice or go out of business.
I'm surprised that everybody knows about it but it still goes on.
