plus I could go to Tokyo, find some weird local only Seiko, and have a cool holiday for the same cost.

Having a story like that around a watch I might hand down to my kids appeals.

haha, I went to Tokyo a couple of years ago solo as I'd always wanted to go, even now there's nowhere that fascinates me more, and I knew i'd go back at the next opportunity,

Going there to grab a watch would be a nice excuse 🙂

So I pulled my interest in the Hamtun watch. Got cold feet (and couldn't be @rsed waiting until Sept for delivery), and really wanted a Helm. The Helm watches re-launched a couple of days ago, so I spent a couple of days trying to decide. Then they sold out! Their new one (The Komodo) got reviewed by JOMW and there were a couple of niggles so I'm actually glad I didn't go for it - but the white dial / mint green markers do look lush and the lume is about the best you can get for a $300 USD watch.

Anyone make any nice purchase recently? Post up some piccies!

Still impressed with the accuracy of the Hamilton field Auto I bought 2 months ago. Set the time at the beginning of March when I changed the date, just checked and it's lost 10 seconds since then.

That's fantastic. What movement us in it?

I'm no expert but my understanding is that it's a modified ETA 2824-2 movement which Hamilton call H-10. It has a lower beat rate to lengthen the power reserve to 80hrs (second hand sweeps smoothly enough for me) and some further modifications to the movement to improve the accuracy. Hamilton are owned by the swatch group and I think this is something they have a hand in developing.

New teaser up on the Rolex site....

rolex

Updated movements on the Sub is a fair bet. Not sure what else could happen though...

The optimist in me is hoping this is why subs, GMTs have been in short supply recently... and that they'll be ample new stocks when they switch to the revised versions.

Lots of people guessing about that Rolex teaser, yet there seems to be little in it to me. 'unveiling 20th'. That's the day before Basel world opens, so the new range will be released on the website early I guess.

According to Google (so it must be accurate) Rolex make 800,000 watches a year, and their sister co, Tudor another 200,000. I would suggest there's no shortage, just marketing supply and demand bo11cks.

Supply of certain Rolex models is artificially restricted.

Rolex absolutely limit the number of steel sports models - a lot of ADs have reported not getting a single steel model on shipments recently, but plenty of precious metal DateJusts and stuff.

It's odd, it probably creates some desire through the scarcity but I'd have thought Rolex would be more profitable making more, ADs too. I'm not an economist though.

What, no comments on the new Tudor and Rolex releases on their websites yet?

Not over keen on any of the new ones really, and glad I didn't wait till after Basel to buy one!

Tudor, wtf! Gopping.

Rolex, disappointed. Especially as they have discontinued the black GMT that is expressed interest in at 2 ADs recently. Like many I also don't like the jubilee on the black/blue.

So many easy things they could have done that would have been liked, but....pfff.

Visually the 42mm yacht master looks ok... If you like rubber straps.... Then you notice is not steel but white gold and the price is (even more) out of reach.

It won't sell well.... The smurf doesn't and that looks stunning.

Surprised they discontinued the black GMT - the price for that will absolutely skyrocket now on the 2nd hand market. If you got one recently you must be laughing.

The new blue (batman?) GMT is real nice though. I don't like the jubilee bracelet on sports models however.

The YachtMaster is cool - they'll sell like hotcakes to the bouje instagram flex rapper crowd, I reckon.

A lot of people will like the DJ 36 - a lof of guys on the forums are hating on the 'big watch' trend that has been going on for the past 10 years or so. I'm uncertain if they'll really sell, I like my 40mm watches.

I expressed interest in the black GMT at 2 ADs recently, but not received one. I guessed it might go, but thought it would be to make way for another bezel colour.... The coke (black and red) was the most expected. The batman looks nicer on oyster bracelet imv, they are now offering the choice for the Pepsi but not for the batman. Odd. It does at least get the new movement.

I agree a 36mm DJ works. I'm no fan of large watches. I've a 41.5 (and very thick!) PO which I'm used to but boy, when I put my 36mm SMP on it feels good! How people with normal wrists wear 43, 44 or 46mm watches idk.

Oh well... The wait goes on for a white dial explorer (1, or an oyster perpetual 39 with 3, 6, 9), and for a steel smurf.

Yeah no standout peices from the new stuff for me, not even anything I thoink might grow on me. I got a 42mm Explorer in the end and glad I did now.

Edit: Tudor look to have dropped the 'Heritage Black Bay' in black that was looking to be a next likely purchase.. In favour of all the gopping new stuff. Hmm.

I do like the new Breitling Superocean. A big improvement. Dial is cleaner and less cluttered. Brushed (rather than polished) lugs tones the bling factor right down.

Just watching the various Basal world content being emailed to me via Jura watches.  There's a new Grand Seiko out, a Sports Chrono Spring Drive GMT in Rose gold, brown leather strap - £39,700.  Holy crap...

That's nice on leather. My brother has a blue Navitimer on a bracelet and it's too bling bling for me. Leather and a light face changes the watch. I think you treat yourself!

They've actually downsized them, they were all 47mm and there are still models on that size, the one I like is 41mm and whilst it wears big, it's not huge.

Some of the newer 'heritage' (I think thats what they're called them) Brietling designs are really nice - especially the 'panda' style chronos.

its a long while since i tried on a navitimer but what i noticed was , because there is no big bezel, the dial is visually large for the case size and it makes them look really big. I did consider one of the smaller versions, the mont blanc i think it was, but for now no.

Difficult price point that is. Personally, I’d save a couple of hundred and get either a Seiko SKX 009/007 or an Orient of some kind, likely a Mako or a Ray. Look at Creation Watches for more ideas.
I may also look at the Seiko Prospex range, some lovely watches for the money there.

Some rather nice suggestions there, think there were a couple of other brands a few pages back I have been meaning to go back and find, just not got round to it. Not particularly in a rush to buy, just getting a look in early so know what to save for / if I may need to save more.

Currently have a Phoibos PY007a in green as an everyday watch, I've a leather strap on it as I find them a bit more comfortable than a bracelet. Someone on here recommended Phoibos and they seem good value for money for what you get.

I do rather like the Steinhart Ocean one options though and currently top of the list.

I like steinhart. had my ocean one on for the last 3 days (on olive green nato). the oyster bracelet i have is good, I'd guess the jubilee will be too. I assume that pepsi bezel is aluminum not ceramic but so what...scratch it badly and a replacement is about tenner IIRC, and they are glied in and easy enough to change.

That to me is a little too close to a Rolex GMT master, I’d be looking for something with its own style and not a copy/homage.

I've done 2 things that feel different to normal behaviour today... I've become a flipper, and a Rolex owner. Flipped the seamaster and now have a subC. Gulp.

Pre-owned. From my usual'little gem' dealer. He doesn't usually do much at this sort of value.... Location, shop size etc.... It's easier for him to shift 10 £5-600 watches then one £5-6k watch. He does get some though and has some regular customers with some that they will flip occasionally. He knew I was interested in a sub/GMT and texted me when he got 2 in. I was only minutes from the shop anyway, on the way there about the seamaster as it was back from service. One sub was 2006, had a hard life, a less then great polish still dinked but priced at £4700. I was interested in the other, 2015 unworn at £6k . Flipped the seamaster back getting sightly more than I paid even after the service. The SubC... Embarrassingly.... Will remain a safe Queen for the moment. Waiting for the big birthday in a few years.

If anyone wants the other sub I can get him to send me photos or pass your contact details on.... Or just give Daryll a call (tell him Neil said you have a 2006 sub)

Thats awesome. Sounds like a grade flip/trade tbh. £6k is a good price too, just a shave over current retail.

Screw the safe, get it on the wrist. And post photos.

I'm at Heathrow in a about 5 weeks time, wish me luck for the boutique there....

I read Schiphol can be good fishing, Heathrow....hmm.

Yes, fairly sure I could get my cash back on the watch pretty easily. Obviously watch finder selling prices are way above what I could liquidate for, but they have 18 month old ones for 7900-8250.

Down at the shallow end of the spend spectrum, has anyone else been dabbling with any of the JOMW reviewed chinese specials?

I took delivery of a "Pagani Design" Chronograph on Saturday which He reviewed a couple of weeks ago, for 27 quid its a ridiculous thing...
Allegedly a seiko mechaquartz movement (I've not opened it yet) what appears to be a stainless case with a stupid big Scratch magnet of a crystal that's been well coated in AR and looks quite nice in sunlight.

I've caught a couple of the contractors stealing a glance this morning, trying to gauge if they need to up their rate...

I've also got a horrible cheap 'Starking' automatic on it's way too now...
For what Aliexpress have had from me I could have bought a basic SNK but where's the fun in that?

I nearly hit a buy on the meca-quartz Jody reviewed. Pics mate? Looks lush. Was gonna get that and the white / blue guanqin nomos lambda wannabe too. Both are great looking.

Just for you then:

Looks OK in the relatively dingey afternoon light, chronograph functions OK.
I'd not have another watch this size though, 44mm seems just slightly too big really for my whispy girl wrist...

For comparison next to my normal daily beater (38mm I think):

Going to change the bracelet for a light brown leather strap, should suit it better I think.

Thing is for under £30 it is a bit of silly fun.

Yeah I'm blessed with skinny wrists too. I don't think it would be so bad if the lugs had some curve to them but as you say, 30 quid it's not all that bad.

There's a Chinese "Mocktail" too.

The more I look at this the more I want one....Especially on the faux shark strap. 2 watches for under 70 quid delivered is super tempting.

Shane the mecha is only hardkex but still a lovely dressy/day watch

Got one sat in my aliexpress basket too, but I'm going to hold off for a bit. I've got one of these coming:

I reckon that's probably got the same movement as the Mocktail, so if that runs OK for a bit then that hopefully builds some confidence...

Jody is pretty keen on cadisen watches, mainly because they come with sapphire, but they are generally a shade more than I'd really want to spend on a Chinese watch.

Nah that Starking does nowt for me.

But blue hands white face.... So this.

Must resist. Want that, and I'm tempted with the mecha..... Then there's a tool watch I've been lusting over but not in stock. Oh and Spinnaker have some nice kit. And Zelos. Too many.... Its a dangerous game. Lol

‘Homage’ watches are just one step away from fakes.

I agree it's not an exciting watch to look at and theres a saphire glazed version for ~£40, but I don't mind the clean dial layout, and really want to see how the supposedly high-beat movement works out.

It's just going to be alternative beater for a while...
I mean £25 wouldn't buy you an automatic anything else, you're paying slightly over double that for a not very exciting bottom end SNK so I'll give the chinese special a whirl...

Really upping their game. Look very similar to some Zenith's. I particularly like this one:

Yes, crowns sticking out like that are a no no for me. Black bay have similar silly long crowns. Proper watches have asymmetric sides to hide the crown in a slight protrusion of case.

Ok I'll take a bite on that homage topic.

I own a Steinhart submariner homage. Does it live on a lot of Rolex work, design and marketing most definitely, so it's naughty. But does it hurt Rolex? No one decides against buying a 6 grand Rolex because Steinhart sell a decent homage for £370ish. If anything the homages and chatter about them help keep Rolex talked about. I guess imitation is the sincerest form of flattery. I'm in favour of a homage, but not a fake, but I accept others will have different views

I've recently acquired my first mechanical watch, a Seiko SKZ323.

[img] [/img]

I was pretty pleased with it. It wears a bit smaller than the nominal diameter, has a nice weight & a white faced diver is desirable to me but not a common configuration I don't think. This was until I realised it was losing ~45s a day and then noticed a tiny amount of condensation inside. Sad face.
I guess it's in need of a service & seal overhaul. The movement is a 7S36, so not posh. Quotes I've had in are all ~£200+ or ~80% of the purchase price. This is disappointing.

Can anyone reccommend somewhere to send it? Or is seal replacement on the caseback and timing adjustment something a keen amateur can attempt?

get it open asap to dry out. it'll need a service as well as new seals, hopefully you'll find someone for less than £200 though.

I love a watch thread. Have a Christopher ward trident a couple of siekos and my dads Raymond weil. Turned 50 last year and have some money to buy a nice watch but can't make my mind up. Like the Tudor pelagos and black bay or an omega seamaster. We're of to lanzarote in a few weeks and was wondering about the tax free status as there's an ad there.

re: the Nomos Lambda comment....

Honestly, how many people would know it was a fake, copy, homage or original. I like the Lambda. I'd hit the Guanqin.

A fake is a copy, like for like. A homage is a hat-doff to the original. A fist bump or a high 5. I'm easy with that. More easy than explaining to the wife I bought a $20,000 watch anyway!

There is very little you can do to return it to factory finish - even tools like capcod etc will probably end up doing harm than good (taking off too much metal, etc).

The best advice is to learn to love it as part of the character and story of the watch. The first scratch hurts the most. My Speedmaster is beginning to look quite beat up these days, it's a workhorse that I've worn daily. It adds to it's rugged looks.

The other option is to send it to a professional jeweler, then get pissed off again when you inevitably scratch it the moment you get it back.

Rolex, Omega etc are the masters of returning finish - they will make your watch look like new. But you'll have to pay for it...!
