I’ve posted photos of this watch before, it’s the first watch I ever owned that I paid for with my own money; (note :this one isn’t mine, access my photos right now). Anyway, I search for similar watches occasionally just to see if any come on the market, rather than eBay, and one appeared the other day, auctioned by Watches of Knightsbridge. Now, bear in mind I paid £40 for this watch, and I found a French advert showing it was 540Fr, which converted to £40. I phoned the auction house to see what it went for - £3400! 😳

Posh watches are for attention-seeking tarts.

Sell the fugly munter.

Do you have to wear a counterweight on your other wrist?

Looks like I'll be attention seeking at the weekend when I wear mine whilst tarting about at the races. 🤔

For starters, when I bought it, it wasn’t a ‘posh watch’, it cost forty quid! Although to put that into perspective, it was 1970, and I doubt I earned more than around £12 a week. And ugly is in the eye, etc; looked at a G-Shock lately? And it isn’t that big, or that heavy, it’s smaller than many modern watches, certainly smaller and thinner than my Seiko SPORK, whoever that is in the photo, they’ve got skinnier wrists than me, and I’ve got skinny girly wrists. See, it’s not a diving watch, it’s a sports watch with stopwatch functionality.

This is the original French advert:

For balance, it's's the one of the only  'posh' watches that's been posted on here I really like.

I think it's much more tasteful than a  modern Rolex/whatever.

It's got a story and is personal to CZ. He bought it the year after I was born. I'm happy he's had years of pleasure from it. He didn't buy it to make a statement, or to make him feel like a hero, he bought it because he liked it.

Similarly, Harry The Spider has an Omega (I think) that was bought by his wife as a wedding present. Why wouldn't you be happy about that?

Good on you fella.

Just measured it, it’s 38mm across the bezel, which is pretty small by today’s standards.

I'm not really one for watches but my wife has just bought me a 1960s Seamaster for our tenth anniversary. I have a great wife.

I think that watch looks really different and has an interesting story attached. All for the good in my book!

It gets a like from me, regardless of its increasing value.

The 70’s had some of the best designers in a generation, the 30’s, The 50’s, the 70’s then it all turned a bit bling... and has continued to be gauch.

Wear that with pride.

That's a great looking watch, really into it.

Interestingly, It has a very similar bezel to the Speedmaster.

(heres a photo of mine)

I know a tachymeter is a tachymeter but yea, interesting none-the-less.

I love watches. Wear it in good health!

I ran across the Yema Bipole many years ago, when I started collecting military watches. Hadn't heard much of Yema previously, at the time there was some NOS around for about £200 from the US, huge discount to the new price, ,  and I was tempted, but they were a bit garish for me.  Bit of a story behind them, and only 1500 made, though I see they haven't really appreciated much in the last 20 years or so, but I still kind of fancy one.

Could be right.

The Speedmaster is 42mm including the crown guards, it's ~39mm without them (this is due to its asymmetrical case. If it were measured as a 'normal' watch it would be 39mm)

I have owned a couple of submariners over the years and always made money on them.

Just did a quick search and no surprise as could have bought one new for around £150 in 1970

Early 1970s = $230,  1980=$950, 1988=$1450  (which is about right as paid £712 for a new one around that time)
