I've got a bag that is advertised as having a lifetime warranty. It's probably two years old and the zip's failed.

They are asking me for proof of purchase. I am not quite sure why - it's clearly one of their bags, and I clearly bought it since I am in posession of it.

Are they within their rights to insist on proof of purchase? I don't know about anyone else but I don't hold onto receipts for every small item I purchase over the years.

Maybe to prove you are the original owner?

It might only be a lifetime warranty for the first owner...

Edit: What he said ^

I had this with Halfords, snapped a 6mm hex. Went in and they asked for the receipt, which I never had. I huffed a bit and they let me off.

Molgrips- will you have an old bank statement to show proof of purchase?

Theoretically, yes.. I can't really remember when I bought it though. I'm pretty sure it was at a currys/PC world though so I could try asking them.
