[Closed] Walking shoe/trainer fit - preventing slippage?

[#7889184]

I recently bought some Keen Koven WP boots.

They felt great in the shop, did a bit of walking with them as well as every day stuff but over the week and a bit I've had them, they've loosened right up and now my heel slips. A lot.

I've changed the standard footbed, which helped a little, and I've also used a volume reducer beneath the heel, and I've laced it so there's more tension at the ankle, but I'm still getting quite a bit of movement.

This is odd, because Keen's advice is actually to go UP a half-size as they tend to come up small - though I couldn't, because once you're past 10, they're only available in full sizes and I'm an 11 anyway.

They've been worn too much to return as new, but I'm not sure what to try next.

I tried lacing them even tighter and wearing thicker socks over the weekend, but my toes started to go numb.

Any advice? I feel I may be left with a rather expensive mistake on my hands, otherwise...

I get terrible heel slip on most shoes. So I go for Salomon or Innov8. It's because I have narrow heels. With me, it seems to settle down after a while as my heel gouges out a hole in the back of the shoe. You can get stick on pads to go above your heel to stop them lifting. Worked for me on one pair of shoes until they fell out but by that time the shoe had deformed so that it was no longer necesary.

Yep all my shoes / boots end up with the heal cup worn down to the plastic former.....

Cheers all. Spoken to the shop and quite surprisingly they're happy to have them back despite having been worn, so a good outcome for me, and I'll be likely to buy a (hopefully better fitting!) replacement from them.

You should probably name the shop. Decent service like that should be rewarded with a free plug on here.

Walking boots, trainers, even my bike shoes now that Salomon are doing them for Mavic.

Ooh.. Salomon bike shoes. If they are Mavic.. I fancy some of those enduro shoes I saw recently, for 'adventuring' that might include hike-a-bike.

I use Spesh or Shimano - even though I have wide feet at the front, somehow Shimano seem to be good.

@scotroutes

Which Salomons you recommend? Looking at the XA Pro 3D GTX or the Ultra 2. Look more or less the same.

but the Crossmax Pros and XL Elites look to be handy too. Fit of mine is as paer Salomon.

I basically live in XA Pro 3D's. GTX for the wet weather (or even long grass). There's an all-black version I wear for work and some green/yellow for more casual use ๐Ÿ™‚ Not the most rigid sole though, so I opt for something more like an approach shoe for walking/hiking. In fact, I use the X Ultra Mids mostly.

What are they really like to walk in? Or ride, for that matter?

I once had some Cannondale shoes that looked like trainers, but the 'normal' trainer style heel turned out to be quite a bit wider than the ones on cycling shoes and they kept clipping my chainstays.

The Crossrides are fine. As stiff as a lightweight walking shoe - so some flex for hike-a-bike. I used them on my Affic-Kintail ride last weekend and they were spot-on. I use CB Candy pedals as I like a wee bit of "platform". I've never tried them on a skinnier pedal so can't comment on whether that would lead to a hot spot.

Chainstay-clipping is a bit of an issue with me as I pedal like a duck. I can't say these are any worse.
