Driveshaft sheared?
car can't be worth a lot, buy a new one
Diff is in the gearbox innit?
New gearbox time!
Scrapper time!
aye, if it is the diff then cost will probably be prohibitive to getting it fixed unless you can do it yourself? If it is a drive shaft then it is an easy fix.
Shame you are not closer to Bristol as if you did decide to scrap it I've got a student friend who needs a car on a very tight budget and a would teach him how to do it.
Not the biggest of jobs on a P-reg polo but the easiest fix would be to buy a 2nd hand box and stick it on. The job in itelf isnt that big and could be done in a matter of a couple of hours.
Get another gearbox from a breaker, then go to a clutch place and get a new clutch installed for £x amount, and ask them to stick the new box in when replacing the gearbox (which shouldn't cost you anything more) .
'Tis what we did.
Phone around mind, you wouldn't believe that some garages actually believed picking a different gearbox up off the floor was more work, and they wanted an extra few hundred quid!
Our local Mr. Clutch did ours.
that's not a bad idea about the clutch as it gets around the whole "we won't do it due to warranty blah blah blah" when fitting a 2nd hand box.
The daughter's gearbox failed on her P reg 120,000+ mile 1.4 Polo earlier in the year. My local garage got me a second hand gearbox and fitted it (they said that there were loads around due to the scrappage scheme) there was a bit of a problem due to different gear lever linkages.
Fitting a clutch with the gearbox off is a doddle!! Its getting the gearbox out which can be a PITA.
Yup, good point Dibbs, some are rod linkage change and crap ones like ours were cable change.
