I've just acquired nordvpn for my Android phone
The first issue I have found is that out of the box android auto doesn't work and I need to bypass certain apps.
Do I need to bypass all apps that auto uses? Eg maps, WhatsApp etc.
It'd be nice if I could limit it to just whilst using auto. I've also found certain websites won't work with it on either.
Why are you using a Vpn while in the car? You're not connected to an unsafe network and doing lots of financial stuff while you're driving are you?

Car park w*nk?
To OP, seems normal that maps and stuff wouldn't work if the VPN is connected to a different country.
Just turn it off while you are driving.
It is inadvisable to look at that sort of material while driving anyway
^ really not a good time to go blind

I wonder what kind of wrap-around dash and massage seat options OP has specced on the motor....?
I have Nord on my pixel 9a and Android auto works fine
You just need to whitelist Android Auto, it seems to need direct network access. Google Maps, Spotify etc can go through the VPN (although you can whitelist those also if you like).
As for why my VPN is enabled sometimes, I used it at some point earlier and forgot about it - not braved a car park **** yet 🫣
What's the argument against using it all the time?
It's pretty obvious when a website doesn't like it but excepting that, once you've whitelisted the necessary apps, are any other reasons?
Lol at some of the #### comments.
Why. Because I currently have it to on by default.
Looked at NordVPN then found out all Pixels (since 7 maybe) come with Google VPN. Which is useful for watching CX "in Belgium" and NOTHING ELSE.
I have 1.1.1.1 on as default, but I also use OrNET Browser occasionally.
I use protonVPN but don't have it turned on all the time. Sky recently made some stupid auto routing and safety features decisions on their backbone which means Youtube Revanced (no ads, background play etc) doesn't work anymore without a VPN. I've not used nordpass so can't state if split tunnelling is a feature you can enable or not but that should let you do everything else you normally use your phone for. I believe in Proton its enabled by default as all my usual stuff like wifi streaming still works.
I use Nordvpn app on my Pixel and it's constantly running in the background.
No issues with Android Auto.
I have nord vpn on phone and it took me ages to work out that it was preventing me from accessing the dash cam in my latest van.

Performance, I'd expect.
Yeah, hurts battery life slightly, and some sites block it.

Maybe Nord bypass it with split tunneling for AA by default. AFAIK Android Auto doesn't work with any VPN active, even Google's own VPN
i use up vanish, and had to disable it in order to use android auto, Sonos. Just saw this thread and tried split tunneling, it works. Android auto and Sonos now work fine.
Just to hijack a bit, I’m planning a trip to India and need a vpn to access Indian train info. Any recommendations for a free one for iPhone, if such a thing exists?

Personally, I wouldn't trust a free VPN. It costs a lot to run one, so how are they making their money.
It's IMHO worth the small payment to get a reliable and secure service. Proton for example is £7 a month if you PAYG. PIA is £63 for 3.5 years if you pay up front. Both of those have endpoints in India and offer money back guarantees.
Be aware though, some services will block access through VPNs.
I bought this ages ago:
https://www.stacksocial.com/sales/vpn-unlimited-lifetime-subscription
Outside of the Stacksocial deal it's $10/month, or $60 annually. It's probably not the best, but it's a one-off payment and it's been flawless for what I use it for which is getting around "this content is not available in your country" web pages. I doubt that Five Eyes is particularly interested in Indian train times.

Opera browser has a free built in vpn which is handy for this sort of thing.

Blimey, I feel old for remembering that
