Yesterday I updated using Windows update. It did about 83mb in one go - never had a problem doing this before; I normally select those I want i.e. take out the Internet explorer ones and others I don't need - but let the security updates etc run.

I did this yesterday and when I tried to start it again today it got stuck in a permanent restart loop at Stage 3. Restart....configuring updates, restart, configuring updates..... nightmare.

Anyway, I managed to sort it by doing a System Restore to pre-update yesterday.

My question is this: how do I find out which of the updates ballsed up my laptop, such that I can run updates but cut that one out?

Things I know already.....
(I'm not installing Windows 7.
I'm not getting a mac.
Yes it's Vista, but I got the laptop for free so not my fault.
No my valves aren't lined up.
Yes my garden needs a trim etc etc)

😉

Do them individually?

Run a chkdsk first and try again - it'll probably work on a second try.

Worth googling - might be a known issue.

Google it

Well known problem with Vista and easy to sort. I had to do it a couple of months ago.

Bob - thanks but already googled it on my phone and sorted the loop - thus allowing me to post 😉

Cheers Cougar - I'll give that a crack.

Ah, but you don't need to cut the offending update out. Doing them all individually is the solution IIRC.
