evening all,
Car = 56 REG 1.6TDCI Fiesta
just had the wife on the phone in a state (im in work until 10pm)
picked the baby up, just about to turn into our close and the car cut out, re-started drove about 100m to the house and cut out again. no warning lights, no noises.
after probing she came clean and said "as i turned into the close i may have run over something, there wasnt a bang i think it 'may' have been a plastic bag or something"
until i can have a look with a torch later im going for a plastic bag been sucked into the air intake?
what worries me she started it again which may indicate whatever it was was caused more damage.

If the plastic bag was actually 'I hit the kerb pretty hard' then it could be the fuel cut off as the car thinks its been in an accident. (unlikely, but pretty sure our Mondeo had something about being able to reset it in the manual.

Bag over the air intake would probably result in it running but refusing to rev (having accidentally allowed a rag to be sucked into my vans intake and become tightly wedged in front of the turbo 😯

Unless you had the lid off the air box and the filter out, I can't see how it could get near the air intake and that's before you figure out how it managed to get from the road surface to the top side of the engine
cheers for replies, as far as i can remember the air intake is right behind the grille and is quite small so id be shocked if a bag got up inside there?
bag wrapped around the fan? but it would just take ages to overheat then cut out?

yes...! just checked and she swore at me!!
She stalled it twice? 😆
Or it could be auxiliary belt tensioner spring snapping, locking auxiliary belt and causing stall.....restatrted drove and locked again......check that and alternator pulley itself as a lot have a clutch pulley to stop any bouncing of the belt buggering the alternator. Neither would necessarily produce a dash light.

she said it cut out totally, she coasted into the close and just about pulled over.
she restarted it then it seemed fine and parked outside the house but as she knocked it out of gear it cut out again.
could be a belt i guess as none of them have been replaced and its done 75k!
Air intake came off? Loose Battery cable?
I was going by this diagnosis with the bang noise...the noise a spring makes when it snaps or indeed an auxiliary belt. Hope it's something cheap!

she didnt hear any weird noise, then again with the 'frozen' soundtrack more than likely being played she wouldnt have heard a noise!
Does it turn over now?
Before turning it over look for cambelt if you can with a torch to make sure it's still intact and the auxiliary belt. Just in case it's slipped a tooth or two.........
ive told her not to do anything until i get home but will more than likely wait until morning, but im sure ill have a sneaky butchers later as i wont sleep.
ill get home and the front of the car will be hanging off probably...
Is that an xray torch suggsey?
Didn't know if there is any tiny port holes on that engine to get a glimpse of the belt still being intact, if it's a plastic cover sometimes you can get a glimpse with careful finger leverage!
Failing that yes x Ray specs 😆
Given that there was no noise apart from a bang, are you sure that there's no warning lights apart from yellow ones?
Cambelt usually has a pop off cover.
Check to see if the turbo has failed , easy to take the intake pipe off and see if its seized/collapsed .
1.6tdci's are complete turds ....not my favourite engine to work on.
Clutch position sensor?
Mine would stall when the clutch was pressed then not start for 5 mins then be fine till clutch dipped again.
Bad earth? Check all the earthing straps - Battery -ve to engine, body, etc.
If it hasn't got stop start it won't have a clutch position sensor
It'll be the points...
A quicker check for cambelt breakage, if a cam is visible through the oil filler hole, put in gear and rock it, should see cam move. Ok this won't tell you if it's jumped a tooth, but nether will just popping the cover back to see it.
Or the condenser.... Or both.
Along with a cracked rotor arm and dizzy cap.
Ah, those were the days. Always took a complete HT and LT ignition system with me in the boot.
Just had a quick check, no visible signs of a plastic bag or anything stuck anywhere. You can see the Cambelt from the front of the engine it is intact.
Turned ignition on normal lights appear started her up and it ticked over fine!?
Going to take it for a short spin first thing.
Probably the nut on the steering wheel - quite often the issue 🙂
CV joint with enough friction to stall?

Sounds like your Flux Capacitor is totally fluxed.

What we have there is the aux or " fan" belt as it can be known
The cambelt is in the timing case behind hidden from view and usually needs the crankpulley and case cover unbolting/ removing to get at it.
Maybe i work on stuff thats too old but ive yet to see a plastic timing case especially not one i can flex in and out with my hands, all mine are cast.
If the cambelt gave way you would know about it though ,
Im going with earliers prediction of cv joint, given she was turning tightly both times it stalled.
My mates focus kept cutting out at random. Went round various garages, typical inconsistent fault finding resulted in all sorts of components being changed to no avail. Eventually an auto electrician borrowed it for a week so he could experience the fault. Turned out to be damage in the loom, it's an hell of a job to replace, his advice, life's too short trade it in.
STW loves an anecdotal that may or may not be relevant.
Had something similar with the wife's old Golf. Would cut out and also refuse to start on hot days and (surprisingly) cold days when the heater was on.
After a long time leaving it with an electrical specialist we finally found out that the problem was hot air blowing over the ECU module in the dash/steering wheel causing the car to cut out. That was a fun few weeks.
I remember the old days with my Fiat Panda... None of this ECU malarky, just a few spark plugs, some electricity and some fuel. Them were the days.
