My laptop will no longer stream video properly. It will play iPlayer and videos on the hdd, but it struggles with Vimeo, Youtube, embedded clips, etc. Midweek mini movies isn't good 😐
Looking at task manager, the CPU uses 98% on a low res embedded clip on bikeradar. Yet iPlayer uses only 42%. Its not a connection speed issue either as the clips are comfortably buffered.

Any thoughts? Or is it knackered?

Its a 5yr old Toshiba Equium, T5200, 4gb ram

Hi
If you're using Firefox as your browser it has an extension called "plugincontainer.exe" which can cause videos to play back really badly even if you have a fast computer.
I now use google Chrome for watching vids and it is much much smoother.
Cheers

Latest version of web browser / Flash.

Malware scan.

Switch off torrents on your other machine.

Its running Vista and explorer 9.
Just updated flash and installed Chrome. Its still the same. Avast finds nothing on a scan. Desktop is not doing anything at the moment.
Which Malware would you recommend?

You could try swapping Avast for MSE.

Really? I've used Avast for years without problems. Why change?

Because you're experiencing poor video performance?

IMHO, MSE is the best AV around at the moment. Even if you were to switch temporarily, or even just uninstall Avast for a few minutes, it'd mean we could rule it out.

What else is running? A system tray full of icons might indicate a lot of stuff running on startup unnecessarily.

Shot in the dark but, you might want to get the latest DivX codec, see f that helps. It comes with a decent H.264 codec which might help with CPU load.

Hm.

Who's your ISP? Is the desktop similarly affected?

What did Malwarebytes find?
