I have a Sony Camcorder (hard drive) and recently got a new laptop with windows media player, but its not much cop. What do people use, preferably free to download to edit and playback mpgs?

You need a ****in mainframe to do much with these high def camcorders after I promised to do something with someone's wedding vid. Oh and all the decent software costs and the stuff they supply with the cameras is usually guff. Sorry to be negative but the whole camcorder thing is doing my nut in at the moment. The low res stuff off the digital stills cameras is more my thing.

scuttler, its not a high def hard drive camcorder as I expected I would need some serious computing power to handle that. agreed about the software with the camera, all the decent stuff is locked out so you need to buy it off sony for £££££, leaving you with a poor trial copy.

The HDrive stuff is a bit of a faff at the moment, and for some of the consumer ones, quality is worse than tape.

mpeg streamclip for mac and PC is handy.

I'd consider a wee mac mini from ebay purely for the video editing. The good stuff is dear but is so worth it. Downgrade the version of Imovie too. the new one is pants although it does HD natively.
FCexpress is only £126 and leaves so much more time for actual mountain biking!

Get Windows Movie Maker (latest version) for nowt and fanny around with that for a while. See where your boredom threshold is before splashing out on something else.

It isn't free, but I use Adobe Premiere Elements and it's pretty decent.

I second druidh. I've made plenty of half decent holiday movies with Windows Movie Maker. It's free and very easy to use. I have it on XP and it DOESN'T come with a DVD authoring tool but I think with Vista it does. That's essential if you want to burn to DVD for watching on a domestic player. Certainly what I've made with Movie Maker is better than half the guff I've seen on YouTube
